Do you ever just feel tired of your daily life? Do you just want to shut everything out so that you can relax and find some sanity? If your answer is yes, you may be overdue for a mental health retreat.

Most of us get caught up with our multi-tasked busy lives, and fantasize about escaping just for a while. Perhaps this is a natural response to all the stressors that weigh on us every day. However, science also says that “escaping” for a while is exactly what we should be doing!

Here is how a mental health retreat can be helpful in rebooting your life.

Image: Unsplash

What Is A Mental Health Retreat?

A mental health retreat typically uses complementary and alternative therapies within a holistic residential setting. The principal purpose is to improve a person’s well-being through the stay. “Wellness retreats” and “wellness tourism” are basically the same thing with just a different name to call it.

The concept of it is so diverse that it can be for any amount of time in any way that allows you to focus on your well-being. A quick retreat in the city might be an evening at a spa that allows deep rest through a hot tub or massage. A more extensive retreat might be for a few days or more at a remote location in nature where they offer extensive programs that help enhance the wellness experience.

Image: Unsplash

Besides, getting away for a while is proven to relieve stress in itself.

Getting Away: Stress-Relief Through Traveling

How Effective Is a Mental Health Retreat?

A study in 2017 looked at participants who went on a one-week retreat to measure the effectiveness of a retreat. The retreat included aromatherapy, health measures, mental health-related questionnaires, and various tests to measure a person’s well-being.

Results showed significant improvement in a person’s wellbeing after a one-week retreat and the positive effects sustained for 6 weeks. As for physical benefits, it reduced weight, abdominal circumference, improved blood pressure, and sleep quality. There were significantly improved results in the depression anxiety stress scale and mood state tests as well.

This means that a mental health retreat can refresh a person enough to get them through for a while after they return.

3 Elements to Enhance A Mental Health Retreat

Here are 3 elements to look out for when you consider planning for a mental health retreat. If it’s difficult to afford (time and money-wise) a full getaway right now, you can still incorporate these elements in your life in small ways to mimic a mini-retreat within your everyday life.

Image: Unsplash

Connect With Nature

Nature heals, soothes, and restores our wellbeing. Being in nature or just even viewing an image of nature reduces anger, fear, and stress while increasing pleasant feelings.

Just a 40-minute walk in the forest improves mood and feelings of health and robustness. Exposure to nature contributes to better physical wellbeing, boosts immune function, improves creativity, reduces blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and production of stress hormones.

Pick a mental health retreat that allows you to indulge in nature or go for a short walk in nature. Go barefoot and feel the ground or dip your feet in the ocean. Even if it’s for a short period, simple direct engagements with nature can help recharge your mind and body.

Image: Unsplash

Greening your office space can also help make you feel relaxed. Perhaps you can create a little mental health retreat in the corner of your room with plants for a relaxing effect.

A Healthy Diet

Our health is affected by what we eat. It’s not only physical, it can affect us mentally too. Science suggests that a plant-based diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and healthy proteins lowers the risk of weight gain and chronic disease.

There are retreat programs that provide healthy meals that help with dietary choices and eating habits. Eating healthy meals for a certain duration will give us a push in a healthier direction.

If a mental health retreat is difficult, you can go on a healthy diet for a few days to self-activate a reset.

Image: Unsplash

Hydrotherapy – Soak Yourself in Water

Did you know that soaking in water is beneficial for your health and wellbeing? Using water as therapeutic treatment is called hydrotherapy, water therapy, aquatic therapy, pool therapy, or balneotherapy.

According to scientific evidence, hydrotherapy improves immunity, management of pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, asthma, anorectal disorders, mood, fatigue, anxiety, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, hyperthermia, labor, etc.

The different effects on various systems of the body depend on the temperature of water and water quality.

Find a spa nearby for a mental health retreat experience or simply fill up your tub at home. If you like nature, perhaps an environment where you can swim in the ocean or lake would be nice. Hot-spring water can enhance health benefits with its mineral components in the water.

Image: Unsplash

A Mental Health Retreat for a Relaxing Time-Off

Stress can build up no matter what kind of environment we’re in. It’s important to notice the signs and take time off when you feel strained. Sometimes a little getaway through a retreat is all we need to come back more energized. Plan ahead and make sure to schedule time off for your mental health!

Image: Unsplash

Homesickness is a very real and common emotional experience. At some point in life, we leave our homes and families to pursue a new challenge by moving or traveling somewhere far away. For many, the first time is when they move to college. For others, it may be when they move to a new city or abroad for new job opportunities or for a marriage. In recent years, it may be more difficult to pay a visit back home with the pandemic traveling restrictions.

The deep anxiety of longing and missing home are very real emotions. Why does it happen and how can we cope with these feelings?

Image: Unsplash

Why Do We Feel Homesick?

As we grow, we naturally create attachments to things specifically available to that environment. Homesickness happens when we are displaced from a familiar environment and are forced disconnected from what we are used to. This causes anxiety and emotional distress.

It can be a challenge to adjust to a new environment, culture, language, social networks, etc. The initial culture shock and lack of control over what happens around you can cause confusion, loneliness, and anxiety. Our fight-or-flight alarm system can also trigger the body to respond in various ways.

<img src="https://selfmind.ai/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/SELF_homesick-1024x683.jpeg" alt="A girl sitting at a desk and while her thoughts wander elsewhere.
Homesickness Symptoms

The consequences of homesickness can manifest as mild to severe symptoms. There is a potentially incapacitating impact on physical, cognitive, and psychological functioning, which can affect anyone no matter what culture, race, age, and context.

Here are some of the typical symptoms caused by homesickness:

Physical
・Disruption of sleep and appetite
・Increased risk of infection and gastrointestinal issues
・High arousal which may lead to physical ailments such as headaches or dizziness
・Hormonal changes that suppress the immune system

Cognitive
・The pervasive desire to return home and pessimistic views about the new environment impacts the person’s general behavior and psychological functioning

Psychological
・Depression
・Loneliness
・Anxiety

The symptoms come as a complex mix of psychological, cognitive, and physical, so it can be difficult to fully recognize that being homesick is the cause of reason.

Image: Unsplash

4 Ways to Cope With Homesickness

The science on homesickness is typically focused on the cause and symptoms, and there aren’t many documented studies on coping strategies. However, research suggests that mental health counseling, social connections, and achieving a sense of belonging in a new environment, are crucial ingredients in overcoming homesickness.

Here are a few coping ideas that could help this process.

1. Explore Your New Home Area

Image: Unsplash

Staying still will give room for the brain to lament all the wonderful memories back home. So, try to get moving and feed your brain with exciting new information. No matter how much you think you’ve already explored your new home area, there is always more to find. Stay open about it with a fresh mind.

Look up places you’ve never been to or wander around and see where you’re drawn to. Even more, bring a camera to see if you can look at things from a different angle. The stimulation you get from traveling is known to relieve stress, and there’s always a way to find new stimulations as if you were a tourist. Try to go out with a fresh perspective and an adventurous mindset so that you can land upon pleasant surprises and new encounters in the area!

It’s time to start finding things that you love about your new home!

Getting Away: Stress-Relief Through Traveling

2. A Deeper Connection With Existing Relationships

Image: Unsplash

Moving to a new area doesn’t mean you become estranged from your friends and family. In fact, it can make you closer.

Sure, the relationship you had won’t be the same in the way you communicate because there is distance. However, this is a great time to connect deeper with your loved ones.

You can exchange care packages that consist of pictures and local products gathered while you explored. Long heartfelt hand-written letters and quality phone conversations are highly appreciated in this day and age where loose and impersonal connectivity through social media has become the main way we connect.

Take this as an opportunity to form authentic connections with the people you love, but don’t dwell and spend too much time on your relationships back at home. Set a time to bond with your existing relationships, but at the same time, don’t forget to create a new life that’s based on your local reality.

3. Work on Self-Care and Mental Health

Image: Unsplash

The isolation you feel when you move to a new place can be used to your advantage. It’s an excellent opportunity to work on yourself when there is alone time.

Moving to a new place means that you can rewrite expectations of who you want to become. Try to form reflective habits like journaling or meditating every day. If health is your concern, exercise and practice a healthy balanced diet. On the other hand, daily reading is a great way to nurture knowledge and relax. Perhaps this is the opportunity to invest in a skill you want to learn. So, take the time to create habits that shape the life you want to form.

If homesickness is mentally getting to you, this is a great time to exercise habits that help you achieve mental strength.

5 Training Methods to Help You Achieve Mental Strength

Science suggests that mental health counseling is also helpful in combating homesickness. If you need someone to walk through the problems with you, an AI (Artificial Intelligence) can help without any restrictions on time, schedule, or location. It’s an affordable alternative counseling method with a free trial period. Give it a try!
→SELF MIND

4. Build A Connection With People in Your Area

Image: Unsplash

Social connections help us feel fulfilled in our life. As much as you may miss your connections at home, it is important to work towards building a new social landscape.

Try to actively go out and meet new people in your area. If you’re really homesick, it may help to find others who also miss home or are originally from the same area as you. Volunteering, online social platforms, hobby communities, and educational classes are all great places to meet like-minded people. Getting to know someone takes time, so stay optimistic even if you can’t find someone you connect with right away.

As you meet new people, try to keep a record of all the fun things via photos and journaling. It is important to see the progression of the great memories you build to acknowledge the growth you’re going through.

Good Things Take Time

Don’t get discouraged if you can’t meet the right people or can’t adjust to the new lifestyle right away. We all start somewhere to create an environment that we can call our new home. It takes time to learn and adjust to the new culture, people, food, and ways of things.

Try to enjoy the excitement of feeling like an explorer or a newcomer. This is the time to embrace fresh perspectives and inspirations that flow in as an outsider, and to create a new life that we desire!

How well can you adapt to stress?

Environment, relationships, family, career, school, etc… There are many unpredictable changes that happen in life. Some of it is a matter of time until you adapt to the situation, others are opportunities of lessons for a person to grow, and some cases lead down to a path of chronic stress and trauma.

Is there a better way to build stress tolerance for all that happens in life? The answer is yes. The human brain is made to learn and navigate through learned experiences and stress is no different. In this post, we will explain how the brain processes stress.

Image: Unsplash

How the Body Responds: Stability vs. Change

The Capability to Keep Things Stable: Homeostasis

Our bodies generally have an average physical standard to maintain.

For example, your average temperature, average blood pressure, and the pressure to keep body fluids flowing throughout the body, theses are all kept at a standard of each person. This capability to keep things stable is called Homeostasis.

However, our physical body changes its standard when there’s a breakthrough change. As we grow, our physical standards change from a baby to adulthood. Another simple way to look at it is to notice what happens when we continually stimulate the body through exercises. There is always a way to break through our current homeostasis.

Image: Unsplash

The Brain’s Capability to Change: Neuroplasticity

We have the ability to change as a result of the various stressful experiences we go through.

Our brain determines what experience is stressful or how a person should cope with it. This capability is called Neuroplasticity (also known as brain plasticity) where the neural networks in the brain change and adapt through growth and reorganization. These functional and structural changes range from individual neuron pathways to systematic adjustments.

Image: Unsplash

Stress: Allostasis and Allostatic Load

If we have a system in place that keeps our body stable, what keeps it intact or causes the breakthrough and adaptation for change?

Allostasis

The driving force that pushes for an adaptive process forward is called Allostasis. Allostasis is the “stress” that impacts the production of mediators such as adrenalin, cortisol, and other chemical messengers. The response of these mediators promotes adaptation to the acute stress we experience.

Once stress (allostasis) hits us, the body responds by creating a new baseline of homeostasis so that it can anticipate and prepare for the next coming stress. Essentially, the body works naturally like an AI (Artificial Intelligence) where it learns from previous experiences. Once new homeostasis is created, we are capable of tolerating or handling the same situation with less stress.

Image: Unsplash

Allostatic Load

On the other hand, allostasis can change to allostatic load.

The changes and stressors that impact our life can have both positive and negative effects. Excessive stress over a long period of time can have detrimental effects on the body and permanently alter the architecture of the brain. This negative effect is called the Allostatic Load.

Allostatic overload keeps us “stressed” while it wears and tears away at the body and brain. This happens when our body undergoes constant stress while the homeostasis fails to create a new baseline to adapt.

Image: Unsplash

The 4 Types of Stress That Becomes Allostatic Load

There are 4 circumstances as to why the allostasis can change into allostatic load:

Repeated “hits” from multiple stressors

Difficulties in adaptation

Delayed shutdowns and prolonged responses in the aftermath of the stress incident

Inadequate response leads to compensatory hyperactivity of other mediators

The best way to prevent these circumstances is by learning how to mitigate stress through techniques that we can practice every day.

Image: Unsplash

An “Active Recovery” From Stress

Stress mitigation through physical activity is called Active Recovery. Active recovery is said to be the best way to prevent allostasis from becoming allostatic load.

There are no strict measures on what counts as active recovery, but generally speaking, you want to keep a 30 minute physical activity that will keep 70% of your maximum heart rate. This includes running, swimming, biking, yoga, dance, etc. When an enjoyable activity increases the heart rate and fully uses the brain and muscle, it relaxes our mental state more than if we just rested. This allows a state where we can prepare to welcome the next stressful event.

Stress Relieving Exercises Are Important For Your Wellbeing

If incorporating a rigorous exercise routine seems difficult for you right now, you can start by just taking daily walks around your neighborhood.

A Walk a Day Keeps Negativity at Bay!

If “exercise” sounds less exciting, you can always take on an active hobby like dancing. Music that heightens the mood and a sense of accomplishment that comes from learning a new skill will surely satisfy those that want a sense of stimulation and growth.

Learn How to Cope With Stress

Review your day to see how you can incorporate small actions to break your thoughts away from stress. At work, you should never keep still in your office chair for hours. If you want to use allostasis to your advantage, try to stand up and stretch at least once an hour. Talk to your coworkers, friends, or family if something is bothering you. Small stress relief habits will prevent allostasis from becoming allostatic load.

As long as we can keep stress at healthy manageable levels, we can use it to our advantage to strengthen our brain for future life adversities.

Your work environment can be the cause of many stress factors. There’s pressure to produce results, difficulties in relationships between the boss, co-workers, and clients. Some environments may even present physical challenges, that by the time we finish our day, the only thing left is exhaustion.

When the stress mounts to be more than we can handle, it can lead to other serious mental illnesses like depression, so we want to make sure we maintain excellent self-care practices.

Signs You Might Be Depressed

Image: Unsplash

Depression and mental illnesses do not manifest in a way that is easily understood from the outside. There are many instances where we’re already at that stage without any noticeable symptoms.

In fact, university studies mention that most depressed patients don’t initially seek medical help for depression. Most people think they have something wrong physically and later find out the root cause was mental. This is called “masked depression.”

Consider that you might be depressed if you notice the following signs:

What is “Masked Depression”? Look Out for These Signs

・You Repeatedly Make Mistakes You Never Used To Make

Image: Unsplash

When we’re depressed our attention scatters, leading us to make more mistakes to perform badly. It can be small mistakes from misspelling to missing details or big mistakes like sending the wrong email to a client or forgetting an important appointment.

These mistakes can bleed into our personal life as well. Even when someone points out the mistake, we oftentimes don’t have the capacity to process what’s pointed out. Eventually, this leads to a path of more mental hardships.

・You’ve Noticed A Change In The Amount of Food You Eat

Image: Unsplash

A university study indicates that when we’re depressed, we tend to overeat or crave sweets. This means that there is a correlation between the amount we eat and our mental state. There’s no doubt we need food to live, but overeating is an unhealthy habit. Weight gain and physical difficulties that come with it can become additional stress if we’re not careful enough.

・You Have Less Communication with Co-Workers

Image: Unsplash

When work gets to us, we naturally distance ourselves from it and communicate less with co-workers. Even if you are an extrovert, if you find yourself being less communicative, declining work-related social engagements, it could be because you’re depressed.

5 Ways To Relieve Stress When You Feel Depressed

Image: Unsplash

If you notice the signs of stress or depression, it’s best to get rid of them as early as possible. Stress coping methods differ for each person, but if you’re unsure of where to start from, below are some methods you can try.

1. Find a Hobby to Enjoy on Your Own

Image: Unsplash

If work is bringing you down, allocate time for hobbies where you can completely distance yourself from the difficulties at work. It can be an outdoor or indoor activity, but ideally, it should be an enjoyable activity that is easy to incorporate into your routines.

If you don’t have any hobbies like that, we recommend books and movies. “Cry sessions” through reading books and watching movies, are known to be healthy for our mental wellbeing. Comedic movies can make us laugh and bring down our stress hormone levels. A dive into an enjoyable world will help us feel less stressed.

The Power and Benefits of Laughter in Stress Management

2. Get Enough Sleep

Image：Pixabay

We all feel terrible after making big mistakes at work. If it’s a matter of our incapability, we can always take the time to grow and learn. If it’s because we’re mentally unwell, it’s solvable.

One of the most important activities for health is sleep. According to a university study, when people continue with 4-6 hours of sleep for 2 weeks, the brain function drops to as if it were pulling all-nighters for 1-2 days. In other words, unless we sleep for at least 7 hours per day, we’re carrying on with our lives under a strong stress state.

If you want to sleep but have trouble falling asleep, we recommend that you start scheduling your sleep. We share tips and tricks on that in our past blog post:

Sleep Scheduling: Say Goodbye To Sleepless Nights

3. Have an Internal Conversation With Yourself

Image: Unsplash

It’s difficult to understand ourselves from an objective perspective. Many realize the difficulties they’re going through, only after someone else points it out.

To avoid this, we recommend having a continual dialogue with yourself using methods of “self-talk.” It’s simple. All you have to do is talk to yourself in an encouraging and compassionate tone. Canadian university research shows the effectiveness of this method too.

There are many ways you can hold conversations with yourself. Talking to yourself from a second-person perspective is known to be helpful. To learn more of how to do this, check out our past post:

4. Talk With Friends Outside of Work

Image: Unsplash

The basic and most effective way to release stress is to talk to friends. It may not be appropriate for you to speak about work stress to co-workers, but you can always rely on your friends from other social circles. The content of what you say doesn’t matter. The most important thing is for you to “feel better” after speaking to them.

Direct conversations with them will alleviate stress and help you gain an objective perspective on your problems. Constructively explaining what has happened and why you are feeling the way you do, will help you organize your thoughts. You might even find a positive outlook in the end!

5. Talk to a Mental Health Professional

Image: Unsplash

If none of the 4 methods above work, we recommend seeking professional help.

The National Health Institute (NIH) lists ways to seek help via phone and text.

It’s not uncommon for a parent to feel stressed over caring for their children. Especially with a firstborn, frustration can build up when an infant can’t speak words to communicate properly. Once the child becomes self-aware, there’s also the rebellious phase that comes with being a teen. As much as there is joy, there are many challenges that come with being a parent, and knowing how to cope with these stressful phases becomes vital.

In this post, we will explain few ways to reprogram your way of thinking so that there’s less stress felt throughout your parenting journey. There are 2 categories for the 2 phases a child goes through that we will explain.

The Infant Phase

Image: Unsplash

One of the top moments a parent feels stressed is when we don’t understand what their infant is trying to communicate. This is a phase where we also have to deal with our own insecurities and frustrations of not being a pro parent yet.

・Embrace a Child’s Need to Learn From Their Failures

Image: Unsplash

Typically, once an infant can walk, they start making a mess. Sometimes they won’t even listen to what you have to say, and that can be quite frustrating. Oftentimes we try to discipline them right away, but it’s important that we give the child an opportunity to fail and learn on their own.

For example, if your child insists on only wearing a t-shirt in the freezing cold outside, a natural response is to try and teach them to wear a sweater “because they’ll catch a cold.” However, a child that doesn’t understand this will reject the idea. This kind of small rejection leads to frustration for many parents.

When you want to discipline a child, it’s important that they understand the consequences. Instead of telling them what is wrong or right, embrace a child’s failure so that they can learn. In this case, let the child step outside in a t-shirt once so they themselves understand that more layers are needed.

・It’s Okay if You’re Not the “Perfect Parent”

Image: Unsplash

Parents are role models for the children, but that doesn’t mean we all become perfect people once we’re parents. Regardless, we all try to strive for perfection so that we can meet our ideals of what a parent should be. This can cause stress and frustration. It’s important to let go of perfectionism and be okay with not being the “perfect parent.”

Parental demands can be stressful at times. If you’re feeling stressed, ask for help from a partner or family to take some occasional time off. You are your own person before you’re a parent. You should take good care of your mental wellbeing so that you don’t reach a point of boiling frustration.

Remember that you’re on a growth path together with your children and everyone in the family. That should bring a sense of relief.

・Visualize Near-Future Possibilities

Image：Unsplash

No matter how hard we try, there are still unexpected moments where we feel the mental toll of being a parent. If you feel that your frustration might be pointed unfairly towards your partner or child, try to envision the following things:

He/she is naughty now, but what are the chances that they grow to become someone incredible?

What would my child be interested in once she/he enters elementary school?

Would I be able to share the struggles of being a parent once he/she has their own child?

By visualizing a future, you can get away from the present reality for a while and also use the gained motivation to strive forward.

The Child to Teen Phase

Image：Unsplash

The idea of individuality and independence sprouts between the child to teen phase. The parent needs to adapt to the rapid changes that happen during this phase. Otherwise, there will be lots of repetitive clashes that create frustration on both ends.

・Understand That They Are Different From You

Image: Unsplash

Once a child enters elementary school, they become more and more capable of doing things on their own, and individual personalities start to grow.

If you come off as too overbearing during this phase, it will lead to countless arguments and stress. As your child grows, try to grow your own sense of understandings along with them. A healthy acknowledgment, that your child is a different person from you, will create a good sense of mental relief in keeping a healthy relationship.

・Respect Their Individuality

Image: Unsplash

It’s very important to respect a child’s unique individuality.

For example, if a child wants to do other things than study, you might tell them, “Your future happiness depends on how hard you study.” A child may resent the fact that you took away their passion if you stop them forcefully. The rebellious phase is a tricky phase that can easily escalate to lots of arguments and frustrations.

Each person has their own way to value happiness. Even as a parent, you should be very mindful not to push your own values of what happiness means. If you can show respect to the uniqueness that they hold and try to be their support throughout, parenting will become less frustrating.

・Learn How To Better Manage Anger

Image：Unsplash

Anger management is an important tool to self-control the anger that manifests within. If you feel anger arise, the next few actions can help suppress it quickly and effectively.

Immediately count to 6 on the spot

Create physical distance between the cause of your anger

Recall positive memories from the past

Take a deep breath

Cook

These are just a few examples of the actions you can take to steer your focus away from anger.

A university study took 4 pairs of parents and asked them to exercise anger management. Results showed that it gave them a rational perspective on their anger and helped curb frustration.

As a child grows, they will become self-aware and disapprove reactionary anger that comes from a parent. The best attitude and practice to have as a parent is to start from within.

It’s not easy being a single parent. There’s no partner you can rely on, you’re the sole breadwinner of the household, and there seems to be none or little time to feel relaxed within your professional and private life. Traditionally, parenting has been done in pair teams or with family support, so it’s understandable when a single parent gets easily overwhelmed and stressed.

In this post, we will explore the mental struggles of a single parent and a few effective practices that can help with difficult situations.

The Challenges That Single Parents Face

Image: Unsplash

A 2019 Pew Research Center study of 130 countries point out that the U.S. has the world’s highest rate of single-parent households. A 2019 Statista survey also shows that there are about 19 million single U.S. parents raising children on their own, with 15.7 million of them being women.

What are the challenges that these growing numbers of single parents face?

The Financial Challenges

Image: Unsplash

Single-parent households are at high risk of financial hardship. Studies indicate that parenting alone heightens feelings of stress, uncertainty, and depression associated with finances.

The overall net worth of a single mother is significantly less than single fathers or married households. 25% of single mothers have wealth exceeding $3,500 and 50% have either no wealth or are in debt. It is said that almost half of single mothers are in poverty.

The financial challenges of the single-parent household creates an environment vulnerable to adversities.

The Physical Challenges

Image: Unsplash

It can be physically tough to manage taking care of your kids and work at the same time. The younger the child, the more physical energy is required to keep up. Some parents put in a lot of work time so that they can reach financial stability and this can wear them down both physically and mentally.

Children are the motivation and reason for parents to keep pushing forward, but the physical strain, lack of sleep, and stress from all of it can affect their mental well-being at times.

Best Ways a Single Parent Can Care for Themselves

Image: Unsplash

It’s a challenge for single parents to find alone time. They’re usually financially strapped as well, which makes it difficult for them to consciously engage in self-care. Single parents should put in the conscious effort to shift their mindset so that they can care for themselves.

Below we introduce the best self-care methods you can try right away.

Create a Photo Album of Your Child

Image: Unsplash

One of the most satisfying rewards for a single parent is to see their kids grow. No matter how busy, try to keep a record of your child’s growth through photographs. This will motivate you in a positive way. Don’t just use your smartphone for taking pictures. Make physical prints to create a photo album so that you can share it with others and look back at your memories.

Whenever you feel stressed, flipping through these albums will help reduce stress. A university study shows that looking back at fond memories helps maintain our mental wellness. It’s a method you can try easily. We provide more details on how to do this in our past post.

Instant Ways to Relieve Stress – Recalling Positive Memories

Read a Little Bit Every Day

Image: Unsplash

Reading is a great self-care method that is recommended for everyone. We use our imagination and try to absorb as much knowledge as we can while reading, and when we indulge in a book we can create a distance from our stressful realities.

If you’re a newly single parent, it may be difficult to find time to read. Try to find small fragments of time within your commute or before bed where you can read little by little.

Have a Talk With Your Employer

Image: Unsplash

It is physically challenging to juggle between parenting and a full-time job. Talk to your employer and see if there’s room for negotiating remote work, shorter work hours, or other alternative ways to work. Sometimes, a change in the work environment can lead to better wellness.

If your company seems inflexible about changing the terms of work, as inconvenient as it may seem, we recommend that you switch jobs. Some companies proudly push forward their benefits of paid paternity leave, flex hours, remote work, and on-site nurseries. You can manage to work with less stress if you find a company that values your needs as a single parent.

Apply for Financial Help

Image: Unsplash

There are many grants and programs widely available if you want to pursue a higher education. However, there are specific scholarships catered to single parents. You can check the long list of single parent scholarships on scholarships.com. The Pell Grants is also a popular federal government aid provided towards low- and moderate-income families based on need.

The programs mentioned here may create some financial relief for single parents who are in need of help.

Talk to Someone

Image: Unsplash

People feel better when they share their struggles with others. With no partner they can rely on, single parents tend to bottle in their feelings, which can lead to worse mental conditions. The stronger responsibility they feel, the more they try to solve things on their own.

It’s okay to vent.

Talk to someone you trust. It can be a family member, a friend, or a therapist. Surely, it will make you feel a little better.

We become a parent when a child is born, but that doesn’t make us a perfect parent.

When we give birth and raise a child, we become naturally close with other moms who have children in similar age ranges. Mom friendships are essential in our social interactions when we have children.

Mom friendships can be great if everyone got along. However, there are definitely moments where they can affect us negatively too. Not all moms get along and sometimes mom friendships can feel like a social obligation. There can be moms that you don’t get along with well and maintaining a relationship can be stressful.

In this post, we will discuss 3 ways to deal with stressful mom friendships.

Why Do Some Mom Friendships Feel Stressful?

Image: Unsplash

If you’re feeling stress or anxiety, it’s important that you identify the root cause of it. In this post, we will look at a university study case where they looked into the reasons why people feel stress or anxiety from mom friendships.

A Tendency to Focus On Rumors and Negativity

Image: Unsplash

The social circles of a mom can be relatively small, and rumors can easily get around. Stay-at-home moms can already feel pretty restricted when they’re mostly tied down taking care of family necessities. This creates an environment where stress can easily fester. Mom friendships allow for moms to relate to each other’s stress where they can vent about their daily stress whether it be about family dynamics or parenting.

Of course, there is no problem if you don’t mind listening to gossip and venting about personal problems. However, a university study shows that most people feel stress from these topics.

There are people that like to go around detailing the issues of another person’s household. This creates the fear that you might be targeted one day as a focus for gossip, causing a lot of underlying stress.

Disagreeing With Personal Values and Parenting Styles

Image: Unsplash

You won’t always 100% agree with other parenting styles. You may feel the urge to distance from other parents that can’t or won’t discipline their children, have bad morals, or are too strict. For example, if a parent never disciplines their child, you may fear the influence this may have over your own child, who will observe the behavior. There is also the concern of being grouped in as the “same” with parents that you don’t agree with.

Feeling a Divide Because of Financial Differences

Image: Unsplash

You may feel anxiety from financial differences within a group of moms. It could be from a casual conversation, a birthday party, what school they could afford for their child to attend, or simply just what they wear. Financial differences can cause a feeling of insignificance or general anxiety for what the future holds.

Some moms may have difficulty feeling connected with other moms that are too different in financial values.

How to Deal With Stressful Mom Relationships

Image: Unsplash

Once you’ve established a relationship and social circle, it can be hard to cut ties. Try the following ways to see if you can lighten the stress.

1. Keep A Healthy Distance

Image: Unsplash

If you’re involved in a mom group, cutting ties from the group without warning may not be the best idea. It may make things difficult if a group of moms deems you “unfit for social interactions,” or if you’re in a small community, it can lead to bad rumors and other troubles.

If there are moms that you don’t get along with, we recommend that you create a healthy enough distance by taking note of the points below:

・Always say “Hi”
・If a mom that you dislike talks to you, give a few light friendly responses and then leave
・Don’t agree or disagree with the rumors they spread
・Try not to share anything about your private struggles

2. Find a Hobby to Focus On

Image: Unsplash

Indulging in hobbies has 2 beneficial aspects.

First, you can temporarily escape from the situation that is posing stress. Most of us have experienced situations where we feel gloomy all day from an incident that happened early in the day. Hobbies allow for our attention to steer away from the stress and focus on something that is beneficial for our minds.

Secondly, hobbies create room for new relationships and communities. Let’s say you took walking as a hobby. You may find people who walk the same path every day as you do and become friends with them. A community besides a local mom group will allow room for you to speak your mind freely and gain different perspectives on what they think of your situation.

If you’re a mom with a tight schedule, we recommend simple exercises and reading, something you can work on indoors or outdoors alone. If you’re feeling constrained within a mom group community, you should try indulging in hobbies.

Art Therapy Exercises: 5 Easy Methods to Try at Home

3. Write Down What Stresses You Out

Image: Unsplash

As we face growing responsibilities, we naturally find ourselves multi-tasking more and more. Sometimes we feel dizzy and overwhelmed from having to constantly filter through and process information. What does it mean to “feel dizzy” when there’s a lot going on and what kind of impact does mental stress have on our visual function?

In this post, we will explore the correlation between our eyes and mental wellbeing.

How Stress Affects Your Eyes

As the saying “the eyes are the window to the soul” implies, there have always been speculations about the connection between the eye and our minds. It’s believed that stress causes the eye to either rapidly move or tense up.

Image: Unsplash.com

Feeling Dizzy

According to one study targeting university students, when students were asked to do quick calculations continually, their eye movements increased in horizontal movement. This could imply that when we are concentrating on a fixed situation, we actually do feel dizzy. Rapid eye movement requires eye muscle activity, which in turn can strain the eyes.

Source: Unsplash.com

Tense Eyes

The autonomic nervous system in our body greatly impacts our mental wellbeing. The sympathetic division keeps us active, preparing for fight or flight reactions, while the parasympathetic division restores the body to a state of calm. Our mental balance is sustained through these two divisions working in harmony. An off-balance state of an autonomic nervous system will affect the mental and physical in some way.

Continual long hours of work keeps the sympathetic nerves active over a long period of time. This creates a tense and nervous body.

It’s not rare to find ourselves staring into our smartphones or TV when we’re feeling down, yet we need to rest our eyes if they feel tense. Tense eyes are a sign of low blood circulation and this can lead to the eyes feeling more strained.

How to Recover From Eye Strain

Whether the cause is mental or physical, the best way to fix eye strain is to relax and not use the eyes. Reading a book or watching TV can be relaxing, but we recommend the following activities for eye strain issues:

Image: Unsplash.com

1. Rest The Eyes

First and foremost, rest your eyes. Rest gives the strained eyes the ability to recover.

You can do this by getting adequate sleep at night. Sleep allows the eyes to physically rest while letting the parasympathetic nervous system work for the body to restore itself. Even if a huge load of stress disrupts our whole nervous system, sleeping should help recover both the mind and body.

Source: Unsplash.com

Another method to try is limiting the usage of smartphones and TV. Screens on electronic devices emit “blue light” known to keep our eyes in hyper-focus while disrupting the body from going into a deep sleep state. It’s impossible to completely cut usage of electronic devices, but we can ease the harmful effects by limiting electronics one hour before bed or by using glasses that cut out the blue UV rays.

2. Look Far Away

Looking far out into the distance helps the eye muscles relax. If you’re constantly looking at a screen for work, make sure to look out the window from time to time. Some urban environments make it difficult to access long distant views, but just looking afar while walking will help with eye strain. A relaxing walk can help uplift our moods too!

A Walk a Day Keeps Negativity at Bay!

3. Eye Hydration

Dry eyes can cause eye strain. When eye muscle movement becomes strenuous, our eyes become dry and strained. An easy way to fix this is by hydrating the eyes with eye drops or pressing pressure points around the eyes.

Source: Unsplash.com

Other methods to try:

Set computer screens lower than eye level – looking down makes it easier for the eyes to blink which helps with eye hydration

Use a humidifier in the room and set the humidity to 60%

Try conscious blinking throughout the day – we forget to blink when we’re focused

Drink lots of water and keep the body hydrated

Watch movies or read books that make you cry

You don’t have to make drastic changes to hydrate your eyes. Small conscious changes can make a big difference.

“Cry Sessions” Help with Stress and Depression

Fixing Strained Eyes Fixes Other Issues

If your eyes feel strained, it could be because of your mental state. Our physical and mental response to any given situation can be complex, so fixing a simple eye strain issue can lead to solving other issues surrounding us.
If our eyes are the window to the soul, let’s make sure we keep them healthy to reflect our beautiful souls!

When we set out to lose weight, we all go through common stressful moments. Many of us have had moments where we thought, “Oof, I have to restrain myself from eating my favorite foods again!” Or perhaps there was that day that where you just didn’t feel like going to the gym. Even worse, some of us can feel cranky from all the dietary restrictions and muscle aches. Oftentimes we experience a stronger than usual sense of stress while we’re trying to reach our goal. Did you know that dance is one of the most effective methods for weight loss with a multitude of benefits?

Stress has a big influence on a person’s weight loss journey and it’s important to control as much as diet and exercise. In this post, we will focus on dancing as a way of exercise to have fun and relieve stress.

Stress: The Enemy of Weight Loss

Image: Unsplash

We secrete a hormone called “Cortisol” when we feel stressed. The higher cortisol levels there are, the more visceral fat we store in our bodies. Higher cortisol also decreases the amount of growth hormone in our bodies, makes it hard to build muscles, lowers the metabolism, which overall creates difficulty to lose weight.

At the same time, stress makes us want to indulge in bad habits such as overeating, smoking, binge drinking, and staying up late. Stress is a big factor in whether or not we can succeed in achieving our weight loss goals.

Effective Stress-Relief Activities

The following activities are known to help with stress:

Spend time to relax

Laugh from your heart

Get quality sleep

Concentrate on an activity

Get adequate exercise

When we carry stress our hearts are being weighed down. Every person has a different level of stress resilience and there’s no one answer in how to resolve it. What’s most important is that we have ways to keep our distance from our stress source.

Dancing is gaining attention as it checks off many of the points above.

The Benefits of Dance for Weight Loss

Image: Unsplash

There are many types of dancing from competitive dancing to casual fun dances for weight loss. The dances we will mention here are anything short enough to practice within 5-10 minutes.

The following are the benefits we gain from dancing:

A Stress Reliever

Image: Unsplash

According to studies of dance movement therapy, participating in expressive and communicative body movements with others creates a sense of safety and stress relief. By letting go of stress, our mental capacity becomes better prepped for taking on the challenges of a weight loss journey.

Dance to De-Stress: Does Dancing Release Serotonin?

A Fun and Painless Way to Exercise

There is a unit called “MET” that measures exercise intensity based on our oxygen consumption. Our inactive resting state is measured at 1 MET and we can measure our activity intensity by MET units to figure out a metabolic rate.

For example, jogging is 7 METs, tennis is 6 METs. Every activity has a MET measurement. The higher the MET is, the more calories are burned in the same amount of time spent on it.

Dancing, which can be categorized as aerobic exercise, is about 8 METs. This is a higher MET than jogging. If the usual exercise of weight lifting and running seems stressful, dancing could be a great way to exercise in a fun and painless way.

Image: Unsplash

Infinite Variations to Try

When we’re trying to lose weight, oftentimes our diet and exercise can become repetitive and mundane. That alone can be a cause of stress. However, dancing is a great way to switch up your mood!

To dance, we need music, and this can easily bring our mood to a high. What makes dancing unique is its variety in the types of dance movements. From hip-hop, ballet, jazz, salsa, ballroom, dubstep, or just freely dancing however you feel, dance has so many means of expression. This also why Zumba has gained popularity as an exercise.

If repeating the same kind of dance bores you to the point of stress, there’s no need to continue. You can always try different styles of movements to keep things interesting.

Image: Unsplash

Dance for Stress Relief and Weight Loss

Weight loss exercises are only effective when we continue them, but it can also become painful and stressful to do the same movements every day. Stress is the enemy in achieving weight loss goals.

Therefore, dancing is an excellent way to relieve stress, get exercise, and refresh our mood. We hope you find a fun dance to incorporate as part of your exercise routine so that you can combat stress while trying to lose weight.

What if someone told you that there’s an easy way to let go of stress, anxiety, phobias, and trauma. All you need to do is to tap certain parts of your body with your fingers. It’s called the “EFT tap,” and it serves to help with our mental discomforts.

Sounds fishy? Too good to be true?

This clinically used method officially called the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) – or EFT Tapping – is known to be effective for mental health interventions. There’s a scientific basis to it and it’s used globally across the world as an easy-anywhere-practice. Below we’ll introduce the basics, why it’s helpful, and how to try it for yourself!

What Is EFT Tapping?

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a form of mental health intervention that draws from theories such as acupuncture, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), energy psychology, and Thought Field Therapy (TFT). It’s popularly known as “EFT Tapping” and was developed by Gary Craig, a Stanford engineering graduate who claims to be neither a psychologist nor a licensed therapist.

EFT techniques involve tapping specific acupressure points on the body, primarily on the head and the face, in a particular sequence. The person focuses on the issue that they wish to treat while using these tapping techniques.

EFT Tapping is commonly used to treat or help with the following:

Anxiety

Depression

Insomnia

Physical Pain

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Phobias

Stress

Weight Loss

Many people used to disregard the technique as the origin and effects are seemingly controversial, but as more recent research suggests, EFT tapping can be extremely helpful in coping with our emotional struggles. We’ll explain the science of EFT below for the skeptics!

Is EFT Tapping Scientifically Proven?

A quick google search will show that EFT tapping can be controversial as some people consider it “pseudo-science.” However, more and more recent research indicates interesting results. More than 100 studies show that clinical EFT does have an impact on a patient’s mental and physical well-being.

A 2019 meta-analysis and review study set to find out whether EFT was an evidence-based practice since there have been dismantling studies that lead to the skepticism of it. When their results were measured under the standards of the American Psychological Association Task Force on Empirically Validated Treatments, EFT was found to be an “evidence-based” practice for anxiety, depression, phobias, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Results showed not only psychological but physiological benefits as well.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):
In 2013, researchers studied EFT tapping and it’s effectiveness on veterans with PTSD compared with standard care. Within a month, EFT coaching recipients successfully reduced significant amounts of psychological stress, and more than half of the same group no longer fit the criteria for PTSD.

Anxiety:
A 2016 review compared EFT tapping and standard care for anxiety symptoms. EFT indicated a significant decrease in anxiety scores compared to other forms of care. Other cases show that EFT can help with public speaking anxiety, and a 2018 Indian study concluded EFT as equally effective as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for anxiety and depression.

Depression:
Results of a meta-analysis review from 2016 that shows clinical EFT to be highly effective for depression.

Weight Loss and Physical Performance:
The physical impact of EFT is less studied than the psychological effects, but there are cases of successful weight loss through EFT. Researchers found EFT weight loss treatments to lead to decreased symptoms of depression as well. The significant reduction in cortisol levels after EFT sessions lead to a hypothesis made in 2013 that EFT could improve both depression and obesity through the reduction of cortisol. A 2010 journal also mentions clinical reports and accounts that EFT is practiced in professional and college-level golf, baseball, and American football to increase athletic performances.

How to Try EFT Tapping

STEP 1: Identify Issue and Discomfort Intensity

Use your device or a piece of paper to write down all of the issues you are experiencing, one by one. Try to separate each issue and don’t clump many into one.

After all the issues are identified, go down each issue to rate the intensity of discomfort you feel on a scale of 0 – 10 with 0 being the lightest and 10 being the worst. The scale assesses the emotional or physical pain and discomfort you feel.

Choose one issue that hits the highest number on your intensity scale. This will be your first focal point as we practice the tap sequence. Focusing on only one problem at a time enhances the outcome.

STEP 2: Establish a Phrase

Before starting the tapping sequence, you need to establish a phrase that addresses two goals:

Acknowledging the issue

Accepting yourself despite the problem

The common setup phrase is:
・“Even though I have this [fear or problem], I deeply and completely accept myself.”

You can alter this phrase to fit the issue, but it should never involve someone else’s.

An example of a non-effective phrase involving someone else’s problem would be:
・“Even though [Name] is sick and struggling, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

Focus on how the problem makes you feel in order to relieve the distress it causes.
It’s better to address a situation where someone sick is impacting your life, by phrasing:
“Even though I’m sad [Name] is sick, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

A great setup phrase for personal stress would be:
・“Even though I feel stress, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

STEP 3: Tap Specific Points

First, take your four fingers (excluding the thumb) and tap the karate chop point on both sides of your hands. As you tap, simultaneously recite your setup phrase 3 times.

2. Using the same four fingers, lightly tap each following point 7 times as you recite your phrase 1 time.

Move down the body points in this ascending order on just one side of the body:

Top of the head (starting & finishing point) – directly in the center of the top of the head

Eyebrow – the beginning of the brow, just above and to the side of the nose

Side of the eye – on the bone at the outside corner of the eye

Under the eye – on the bone under the eye, approximately 1 inch (in) below the pupil

Under the nose- the point between the nose and upper lip

Chin – halfway between the underside of the lower lip and the bottom of the chin

Beginning of the collarbone – the point where the breastbone (sternum), collarbone, and first rib intersect

Under the arm – at the side of the body, approximately 4 in below the armpit

After the underarm, go back to the top of the head to finish your last taps there

If the phrase is too long, you can use reminder shortened phrases. If your setup phrase is, “Even though I feel stress, I deeply and completely accept myself.” your reminder phrase can be, “This stress.” Recite this phrase at each tapping point. Repeat this sequence two or three times.

STEP 4: Retest the Intensity of the Issue

At the end of your tapping sequence, rate your intensity level on a scale from 0 to 10. Compare results with your initial intensity level. If you haven’t reached 0, repeat this process until you feel a difference. It could take multiple attempts for some people to feel the difference. If the intensity level has decreased, you can take another issue from your initial list to work on.

Although tapping can be performed on your own, a qualified EFT practitioner may help you further in learning and understanding tapping techniques for more serious problems.

It’s unbelievable that such simple tapping and phrasing could have such significant impacts on our mental and physical wellbeing. Many schools around the world are starting to implement EFT programs to better equip students with the coping skills to face adolescent challenges and other environmental stressors. No matter how small the problem, taking early care of stress is essential to our wellness. Give EFT tapping a try next time you feel stressed!
