As we face growing responsibilities, we naturally find ourselves multi-tasking more and more. Sometimes we feel dizzy and overwhelmed from having to constantly filter through and process information. What does it mean to “feel dizzy” when there’s a lot going on and what kind of impact does mental stress have on our visual function?

In this post, we will explore the correlation between our eyes and mental wellbeing.

How Stress Affects Your Eyes

As the saying “the eyes are the window to the soul” implies, there have always been speculations about the connection between the eye and our minds. It’s believed that stress causes the eye to either rapidly move or tense up.

Image: Unsplash.com

Feeling Dizzy

According to one study targeting university students, when students were asked to do quick calculations continually, their eye movements increased in horizontal movement. This could imply that when we are concentrating on a fixed situation, we actually do feel dizzy. Rapid eye movement requires eye muscle activity, which in turn can strain the eyes.

Source: Unsplash.com

Tense Eyes

The autonomic nervous system in our body greatly impacts our mental wellbeing. The sympathetic division keeps us active, preparing for fight or flight reactions, while the parasympathetic division restores the body to a state of calm. Our mental balance is sustained through these two divisions working in harmony. An off-balance state of an autonomic nervous system will affect the mental and physical in some way.

Continual long hours of work keeps the sympathetic nerves active over a long period of time. This creates a tense and nervous body.

It’s not rare to find ourselves staring into our smartphones or TV when we’re feeling down, yet we need to rest our eyes if they feel tense. Tense eyes are a sign of low blood circulation and this can lead to the eyes feeling more strained.

How to Recover From Eye Strain

Whether the cause is mental or physical, the best way to fix eye strain is to relax and not use the eyes. Reading a book or watching TV can be relaxing, but we recommend the following activities for eye strain issues:

Image: Unsplash.com

1. Rest The Eyes

First and foremost, rest your eyes. Rest gives the strained eyes the ability to recover.

You can do this by getting adequate sleep at night. Sleep allows the eyes to physically rest while letting the parasympathetic nervous system work for the body to restore itself. Even if a huge load of stress disrupts our whole nervous system, sleeping should help recover both the mind and body.

Source: Unsplash.com

Another method to try is limiting the usage of smartphones and TV. Screens on electronic devices emit “blue light” known to keep our eyes in hyper-focus while disrupting the body from going into a deep sleep state. It’s impossible to completely cut usage of electronic devices, but we can ease the harmful effects by limiting electronics one hour before bed or by using glasses that cut out the blue UV rays.

2. Look Far Away

Looking far out into the distance helps the eye muscles relax. If you’re constantly looking at a screen for work, make sure to look out the window from time to time. Some urban environments make it difficult to access long distant views, but just looking afar while walking will help with eye strain. A relaxing walk can help uplift our moods too!

A Walk a Day Keeps Negativity at Bay!

3. Eye Hydration

Dry eyes can cause eye strain. When eye muscle movement becomes strenuous, our eyes become dry and strained. An easy way to fix this is by hydrating the eyes with eye drops or pressing pressure points around the eyes.

Source: Unsplash.com

Other methods to try:

Set computer screens lower than eye level – looking down makes it easier for the eyes to blink which helps with eye hydration

Use a humidifier in the room and set the humidity to 60%

Try conscious blinking throughout the day – we forget to blink when we’re focused

Drink lots of water and keep the body hydrated

Watch movies or read books that make you cry

You don’t have to make drastic changes to hydrate your eyes. Small conscious changes can make a big difference.

“Cry Sessions” Help with Stress and Depression

Fixing Strained Eyes Fixes Other Issues

If your eyes feel strained, it could be because of your mental state. Our physical and mental response to any given situation can be complex, so fixing a simple eye strain issue can lead to solving other issues surrounding us.
If our eyes are the window to the soul, let’s make sure we keep them healthy to reflect our beautiful souls!

Do you ever stay up tossing and turning in bed, even though you just want to fall asleep? Does insomnia bother you through the night, or do you have a hard time feeling refreshed in the morning even though you should have slept enough? How can we understand our own sleep habits and sleep schedules to make better improvements?

Issues with sleep are a common problem for many people today. Since sleep is an important health behavior that regulates our mental and physical condition, the effects of poor sleep are immeasurable. How can we improve our sleep habits once they are disrupted and how can we regain healthy sleeping patterns? Experiencing sleepless nights can make us feel uncomfortable and anxious about sleep itself and we may find ourselves desperate for deep sleep.

Sleep is a natural physiological phenomenon of the body and a difficult state to achieve through sheer willpower alone. If we want to break the cycle of sleepless nights, we need to guide ourselves into sleep in the most natural way possible. We introduce Sleep Scheduling; a cognitive-behavioral therapy approach to chronic insomnia.

The Basics of Insomnia

Generally, insomnia is defined by a lack of proper sleep for over a month with symptoms of fatigue, decreased motivation, decreased concentration, and loss of appetite. The cause of insomnia varies, including but not limited to day-to-day stress, psychological illnesses, or side effects of medication.

The hours of sleep required for a healthy lifestyle varies from person to person. Some people will feel sleepy during the day even after 8 hours of sleep and some people will function perfectly fine on just 3 hours of sleep. It’s also known that our necessary sleep time for health changes with age. It’s natural to require less sleep as we age, so sleeping difficulties are less of a concern when we age. These natural changes are not indicative of insomnia.

Check out the article below for more details on the basics of insomnia.

Insomnia Types and How to Deal with Them

When we experience continuous sleepless nights, many of us try to spend more time in bed to maximize rest. However, this may lead our brain to signal our “place of sleep” (a.k.a the bed) as a place of activity or wakefulness, leading to further sleeplessness.

“Sleep scheduling,” allows the brain to understand the bed as a place reserved only for sleeping. The following points become important to achieve this:
・Spend time outside of bed until you actually feel sleepy
・Do not try and go to bed until you actually feel sleepy
・If you are struggling to sleep, get out of bed

What is Sleep Scheduling?

Sleep scheduling is an effective approach for people who experience daytime discomforts due to long term insomnia. If you are not currently experiencing any symptoms of insomnia, be careful as this may disrupt your sleep cycle.

1. Understand Sleep Efficiency

Before we implement a sleep schedule, we must first understand our sleep habits. It’s important to know how long it actually takes to fall asleep once we get into bed and how long the sleep felt when we wake up the next morning. A good way to do this is by keeping a “sleep journal” to record our everyday sleep habits. Once there’s a good understanding of our sleep habits, we can calculate sleep efficiency (the ratio of our actual sleep over time spent in bed). Use the equation below to calculate your sleep efficiency.

For example, if you got in bed at 10:00 PM and woke up at 8:00 AM the next morning, you will have spent 10 hours in bed. Within that time, let’s say you felt like you actually got 6 hours of sleep. In this case, your sleep efficiency would be 60%. The goal is to achieve an average of 85% or more for adequate weekly sleep efficiency.

2. Go To Bed Later to Improve Sleep Efficiency

Once we grasp a good idea of sleep efficiency, adjust bedtime to 15 – 30 minutes before the actual sleep time in order to get closer to the 85% average sleep efficiency. If, as in the example above, you sleep for 6 hours and wake up at 8:00 AM, you should adjust bedtime to be at 1:30 – 1:45 AM. Until then, spend time outside of the bedroom to condition your body and brain to believe that the bed is strictly for sleeping only.

3. Gradually Lengthen Sleep Hours

Once the average weekly sleep efficiency exceeds 85%, gradually increase sleep time by either going to bed 15 minutes earlier or waking up 15 minutes later. Aim for a sleep duration that will not negatively impact daytime activities. These adjustments to our sleeping habits may temporarily make us go to bed later and wake up earlier. However, concentrated sleep hours can improve our subjective satisfaction towards sleep quality

Sleep scheduling can be an effective way to improve insomnia, but the root cause of it still needs to be addressed. If insomnia is caused by illness or side effects of medication, we should make improvements based on the guidance of a professional doctor. Make sure to carefully determine the cause of sleeplessness, before taking appropriate measures for improvement.

Better Sleep Habits Lead to More Fulfillment

Sleep is a vital behavior to our health that sustains life. Sleep also occupies one-third of our lives. Good sleep habits help us maintain good physical and mental health. It contributes to our ability to reach full potential and further grow.

It’s not easy to change the lifestyle we already have to adjust for better sleep. Although, with its benefits of creating a healthier and more fulfilling life, it will be well worth the effort.

→ Looking to improve your mental health?
Yoga is an ancient practice that incorporates breathing exercises, meditation, and special poses, which are combined in a way to promote relaxation and reduce stress for the mind and body. Word of mouth says yoga has many health benefits to your mental and physical wellness, but what exactly are those effects? How does it differ from other forms of exercise? And where should beginners start when first getting into Yoga? This article will help in answering all of these questions.

Part 1: What Can Yoga Do For Me?

Psychological Benefits of Yoga

First, let’s talk about the mental health benefits of Yoga. Yoga is primarily known for its effectiveness in reducing stress and promoting relaxation. Multiple studies have looked into the relation of yoga and stress, and it is believed that yoga helps reduce cortisol, which is the main stress hormone in humans. In addition, regularly practicing yoga has also shown to assist with reducing symptoms of anxiety and PTSD. While the exact reason for this is unknown, the combination of meditation and healthy exercise is definitely a powerful way to increase relaxation and improve one’s quality of life.

Furthermore, some studies have shown that regularly practicing yoga can lead to improved sleep quality. One study comparing two groups – one which practices yoga regularly, and a control group – showed that the group practicing yoga were able to fall asleep more easily, and felt more refreshed in the mornings. Another study showed that yoga reduced sleep disturbances, improved quality of sleep, and reduced the need for sleep medication.

Physical Benefits of Yoga

In terms of physical beneifts, the various poses that are utilized in yoga – whether they are simple or more advanced and complicated – mostly incorporate a combination of core strength, flexibility, and balance. Furthermore, maintaining these poses will also contribute to improvements in physical endurance. In this sense, yoga is the one-stop solution for improving your base-level altheticism and physical strengh. In this way, yoga exercises can benefit you in your fitness journey, even as beginners.

Yoga has also been suggested to improve symptoms of chronic pain. Multiple studies have looked into the effects of yoga on patients with chronic physical pain, and have shown that long-term practice of yoga can reduce pain and increase physical functionality. In another cases, yoga has proven useful for patients who suffer from migrains, by reducing headache intensity, frequency, and pain level. Researchers have suggested that this may be due to the fact that yoga stimulates the vagus nerve, which is known to influence migrains.

Yoga V.S. Other Forms of Exercise

Yoga combines body strength, flexibility, core balance, breathing exercises, and meditation, which makes it quite different from other popular forms of exercise or sports. While it might not seem like the most physically enduring of exercises, you would be surprised at how much you lose your breath by the end of an hour-long session. One study compared two groups – one which were instructed to practice yoga, and another which were instructed to practice calisthenics – over the course of a year. After one year, yoga proved to have higher benefits in improving overall flexibility of the body.

While exercise in general is healthy for the mind and body, one key unique factor about yoga is the incorporation of meditation. Various studies have shown that regularly practicing meditation can help to improve quality of life in many areas. One such study examined the effects of mindfulness meditation on depression, anxiety, and stress. The results showed that a 10-week course on mindfulness meditation had positive effects on all three affective states, reducing their severity and intensity in the participants. Distress levels can be reduced by an increased awareness of one’s cognitive and emotional states, and mindfulness meditation helps individuals to accept thoughts, emotions and sensations as they occur, minimizing their influence on sustaining affective disorders.

Yoga combines the positive effects of meditation with the health benefits of physical exercise, which makes it a unique endeavour for anybody who is keen to take part. Your skill level does not matter, beginners can reap the health benefits of yoga just as much as more advanced practitioners. The important thing is keeping with it!
