When we experience hardships it can be difficult to stay positive. It’s not easy to stay optimistic when we notice our thoughts steer negative, but most of us are always hoping to achieve a certain level of positivity. First of all, why do we fall into our negative thoughts? Second of all, how does sleep help with our negative thoughts?

3 Common Reasons of Negativity

According to a study at a university, there are 4 elements that create negative thinking: Regret and Shame, Negative Expressions, Lack of Confidence, and Criticism Towards Others. If we sum it up, the following 3 reasons are the most common triggers for negative thinking.

Image: Unsplash

Severe Long-Term Stress

Stress can be a direct cause of negativity. When we mess up at work/school or can’t perform well, negativity takes over our minds, making less room for positivity to grow. If we surround ourselves with negative people, sometimes we end up being heavily influenced by them too.

Instant Ways to reduce stress – The Three Good Things

Image: Unsplash

Past Traumatic Experiences

Past trauma can impact us in many ways. A person full of optimism and positivity can suddenly change negatively due to shocking incidents. Some people can fall into a negative trap where they can’t believe in anyone after experiencing betrayal from someone they used to trust.

Image: Unsplash

Hormonal Imbalance Due To Poor Lifstyle Choices

A neurological chemical called serotonin has to do a lot with our emotional control and stability. A lack of serotonin not only makes us less energetic, but it can also make us negative too. For your body to properly produce serotonin, a stress-free lifestyle with exercise, a healthy diet, and sunlight becomes crucial. If we can shift our lifestyle with healthier lifestyle habits that promote serotonin, that can push our minds back towards positivity.

Healthy Lifestyle Habits for a Sustainably Healthy Mind

3 Reasons Sleep Heals Negativity

Image: Unsplash

Typically, if the cause of our problems is clear, we’d have to fix that first. However, causes such as past trauma or long-term stress cannot be fixed overnight and that can feel like a struggle. Therefore, we advise that you start easy with getting plenty of sleep. In this section, we’ll explain how sleep can heal negativity within our minds.

Sleepless Night Relaxation Methods for Quality Sleep

It Heals the Physical Body and Brain

Image: Unsplash

The brain can rest and condition the body’s hormonal balance when it goes to sleep. A well-balanced hormonal function can fight negativity and build stress resilience towards the incoming negativity we experience.

The body needs to feel energized enough before we start exercising towards a healthy serotonin function. Sleep also helps our whole body restore itself. Without fundamental sleep, it’s hard to make the change we desire.

Leads To Better Lifstyle Habits

A structured sleeping schedule, sunlight, and a healthy diet all contribute towards getting rid of our negativity. A good night’s rest promotes serotonin secretion which helps us back to positivity. Good sleep also helps us stay efficient during the day. Most of us have pulled all-nighters during the weekday only to try and catch up on sleep during the weekends. We can start working on positivity today, just by starting off a healthy sleeping schedule.

Stops The Negativity Loop

Image: Unsplash

Once we fall into a negativity loop our problems seem infinitely larger than what they are. We need to reset our minds so that we can shift gears towards positivity. To easily do this, we recommend sleep.

When we sleep, our thoughts are forced to shut down and we can leave from thinking so much. This gives us the capability to look at things more objectively and calmly when we wake up.

If you have a hard time sleeping, an AI app can help you sort your thoughts through too.

Negative Thoughts are No More with “Automatic Thinking”

Sleep Well for a Healthy Mind and Body

Image: Unsplash

Good sleep nourishes our brain and body while it puts our negative thinking on hold. It’s a necessary step for proper serotonin secretion and the key to stopping the negativity. Next time you feel negative and down, stop what you’re doing and go to bed.

We often hear the term “coaching,” especially with many professionals offering services that try to lead others to success. However, some may have reservations about the idea of coaching because of its widely applicable range of practice. In the mental wellness realm, trained life coaches can effectively equip people with better self-help skills while guiding clients through a self-development journey.

In this post, we will introduce the idea of having a life coach and its merits.

What is A Life Coach?

Image: Unsplash.com

A life coach encourages conversations that promote reflection and answers from within. They also assist through necessary steps to achieve a client’s personal goal. Life coaches are a type of wellness professionals who help people attain greater fulfillment through communication and mentorship.

The estimated that there were approximately 71,000 coach practitioners in 2019 globally. This was a 33% increase compared to the 2015 estimate, as coach services gain popularity around the world.

The Difference Between Coaching and Counseling

Similar to coaching is the term counseling. The two have elements that overlap, although coaching is action-oriented while counseling is coping-oriented.

Coaching

Counseling

-Helps you recognize what you think
-Helps you set and achieve goals
-Challenges you frequently
-Focuses exclusively on present & future
-Focuses on your potential
-Trained to help clients move forward
-Recognizes the old core beliefs stopping you
-Service is paid for personally

-Helps you realize how you feel
-Helps recognize and solve your problems
-Provides supports with empathy & understanding
-Focuses on past, present, and future
-Focuses on being at peace with yourself & life
-Trained in mental health conditions
-Recognizes mental health conditions holding you back
-Service may be covered by work insurance.

What Kind of People Benefit From A Life Coach?

A life coach can lead us to answers and perspectives that we wouldn’t have found on our own. If you’re the following type of person, you can benefit from a personal life coach:

Image: Unsplash.com

People Who Want Change

We all have different struggles; family, friends, romantic, career, academics, etc. If you’re looking for a change but don’t know where to start, a coach can be helpful. On the other hand, if you’re happy with life as it is and don’t need much change, a coach may feel like a waste of time.

People Facing Stressful Situations

Are you feeling stressed from work or school? A coach can set you on a more mentally sound path. One university study reports that coaching helps with stress reduction. A coach can guide you through finding the stress cause and advise the best approach. This helps set a better trajectory towards recovery and a healthier mental state.

Image: Unsplash.com

A coach not only “teaches” you, but helps you recognize what YOU think. They help you take your own initiative towards making better decisions. The following are some of the benefits to having a life coach:

The Ability to Proactively Solve Problems

Coaching helps draw out answers that are deep within us. To do this, a coach will repeat dialogues focused on what possible blocks are, what to do, and how to plan towards a goal. A client can transform their mindset from passive to proactive through the repetitive exercises and learn how to face challenging circumstances.

Better Communication Skills

Excellent communication skills are vital in any kind of working environment. Repeated coaching sessions train clients to become better communicators. It also helps a client better understand the ‘intentions’ behind what others are trying to communicate. Communication skills gained through sessions will help anyone become a more proficient business person.

Entering ‘the Zone’ for Optimal Performance

A ‘zone’ describes a hyper-concentrated state where we become fully immersed in whatever we are doing. Anyone can ‘enter the zone’ through sports, business, academics, or hobbies.

Coaching sessions can help people gain clarity in how to visualize a path to success. The sessions help with continual positive thinking which makes it easier for a person to enter a flow state to give optimal performance. A positive mindset also combats negativity to keep our mental states calm.

Give life coaching a try to explore and transform parts of yourself you never knew.

With lockdowns happening around the world, many people have been spending more time at home. There may be fewer opportunities to go out and exercise, and this can trigger worries about our health and weight. When it comes to weight loss, many people resort to restricting their diet. However, restricting diets can lead to the development of eating disorders.

In this post, we will discuss the dangers of eating disorders and how to prevent them.

Causes and Influences of Eating Disorders

Image: Unsplash

An eating disorder, as the word implies, is a condition where there is trouble present in the way a person consumes food. There’s Bulimia, in which a person overeats before forcefully making themselves throw up, and Anorexia, in which a person barely eats and overexercises, and may even throw up the minimal food that they try to consume.

Bulimia: Extreme Stress and Pressure

Image: Unsplash

Many of us feel happy when we eat delicious foods. Studies show that people gain high amounts of happiness from satisfying meals. Furthermore, it is said that the meals we eat have a direct impact on our mental state.

Bulimia is oftentimes triggered by holding onto mental stress. High-demand environments in school or work can cause high amounts of stress that leads to people overeating excessively. A person finds stress relief through eating, then feels guilty afterward and feels more stressed which urges them to eat more again. This is the perpetual negative cycle a bulimic can fall into.

Anorexia: Self-Hate and Extreme Desire for Weight Loss

Image: Unsplash

People who have negative body images are more prone to anorexia. A belief that others would view them positively if they were thinner or an experience where they were made fun of for being fat will push them toward self-hate. This is thought to be the stem root of why people become anorexic.

However, sometimes anorexia is much more complicated than that and is hard to treat. We recommend anyone with possible anorexia to go seek professional help.

Anorexia causes both mental and physical pain. In terms of physical, the lack of nutrients causes insomnia, low body temperature, dizziness, dry skin, loss of hair, and menstrual cycle irregularities. In terms of mental, a person can become short-tempered due to hormone imbalances, experience poor concentration, and memory. Anorexics also constantly tire themselves out from the fear of gaining any weight. There is no benefit to anorexia and it should be treated immediately.

Easy Preventative Measures We Can Start From Today

Image: Unsplash

Eating disorders are hard to overcome once it happens, so the best way to prevent it is by incorporating preventative measures within your daily activities. Bulimia and anorexia both have mental strain as a common trigger, so it’s important that we strive for minimal stress every day to prevent it.

1. Make Exercise Your Hobby

Image: Unsplash

Exercise is an excellent way to prevent eating disorders. It’s a healthy way to control weight and health for anorexics and a great stress reliever for bulimics.

As for the ideal exercise, cardio like walking, running, and swimming are great as you can keep at it at your own pace. If it’s possible to habituate, team exercises like soccer and baseball are wonderful choices as well.

Find an exercise that you can enjoy with moderate strain.
2. Enjoy Meals with Your Family

Image: Unsplash

There are 2 reasons why family meals can help prevent eating disorders.

First, a person can compare the amount they eat with others around them. People with eating disorders don’t eat enough or overeat. One of the reasons for this is that they have a hard time understanding standard portion sizes. By eating meals with family, they can observe how much other people eat and understand portions. This could prevent them from steering off into unhealthy beliefs and irregular portions.

Secondly, it changes the way they enjoy food. The focus on food causes extreme portions, ultimately leading to eating disorders. There’s no problem in enjoying the food, but if the focus can shift to the enjoyment of the time spent with others, it can take away their focus on food.

３. Talk About Your Struggles to Others

Image: Unsplash

Eating disorders are believed to be triggered by some sort of mental strain they experience. Therefore, it’s important that we are letting go of our stress constantly through talking to others. Whether it’s family, friends, co-workers, or a therapist, sharing our struggles with someone can be very helpful. Just verbalizing the experience can alleviate a lot of the stress, so we recommend that you talk to someone before the stress snowballs into something bigger.

Face Yourself to Overcome Eating Disorders

Image: Unsplash

Eating disorders don’t really have an easy fix to them. It’s difficult to completely cure it once it occurs, so preventative measures are essential. We hope that everyone who reads this chooses to live an authentic and healthy life where they don’t feel the need to judge themselves through the numbers on a scale.

There are people who rush to their favorite brand product as soon as their paycheck comes in. It may not be something they particularly really want, but the ‘want’ to collect the “brand” product, creates the ‘need’ for it. This is called brand addiction. For some, this unhealthy need may even create financial problems.

Many people find satisfaction in owning brand goods. It’s not a problem if there’s enough money for it, but some people tend to overreach for what they can afford. In this post, we’ll discuss brand addiction, why people feel the need for it psychologically, and how to prevent it.

The Psychology of Brand Addicts

Image: Unsplash

A tiny luxury brand logo placed on a plain white t-shirt can inflate the price tag to surprising amounts. The material or design doesn’t have to particularly be special for a high-end brand product to sell. Then why are some people so fixated on brand products and can’t help to own more?

The Need to Feel Superior

Image: Unsplash

When a person wears luxury items out or posts an expensive bag that they bought, they get a reaction whether it’s the like button or a direct compliment. This empowers them to feel superior and this alone is a good enough motive for some people to purchase these products.

Studies show that people who have the need to feel superior usually have an Inferiority complex. This is why they are unconsciously attracted to things that signify power.

The Satisfaction of Owning Certain Name Brands

Image: Unsplash

The satisfaction that comes from owning brands is enough for someone to become a shopaholic. It is healthy to work towards a goal to own what you want, but excessive desires can put us under financial strain.

The Collectors Mentality

Image: Unsplash

Some people have a collectors mentality where they just want it because it’s a new product even when they don’t have an immediate use for it. This can lead to excessive buying. In this case, the ‘purchasing’ of the brand becomes the goal. These types of people tend to spend on several brands to collect, but oftentimes lose sight of their spending habits.

There are also people who lose interest once they ‘own’ the item with most collected items being unused and stored at home.

How to Not Overinvest Into Brand Addiction

If you’re wealthy enough, it may be no issue to keep spending on luxury items, but some people want to stop this habit. Conscious and deliberate actions are necessary to prevent the habit of spending.

1. Find A Hobby

Image: Unsplash

People who depend on brand names for value oftentimes find joy in collecting luxury items. If they find something else they can feel passionate to focus on, it could change their priority and beliefs in what’s important besides shopping. Therefore, we recommend finding a hobby first.

It can be an outdoor or indoor activity. We recommend something as casual as running or karaoke where participation is fairly easy. Participation in hobbies will distance a shopaholic from the desire to shop and fulfill the loneliness that they might have been trying to fill in.

Study shows that a portion of people who fall into becoming a shopaholic tend to have very thin relationships and don’t have the opportunity to self-express. If there is void and loneliness that creates the need to suppress their feelings, it’s only natural that they resort to shopping to fill it in.

Hobbies and fun activities are effective in feeling less lonely.

2. Learn How to Manage Finances

Image: Unsplash

Many people who overspend on luxury items don’t have accurate ideas on how much they’re actually spending. They use their credit card for the purchase and feel surprised by the total bill later. It can feel like a never-ending cycle of payments that keep accumulating.

Money habits need to be addressed daily for responsible financial decisions.

Nowadays there are tons of apps that can help keep track of our expenditure. The most important thing is to understand how much you are actually using. Once there’s a clear understanding, it’s easier to pull back from spending habits.

3. Seek Professional Help

Image: Unsplash

If the shopaholic tendencies and brand addiction is serious, you can seek professional help for these problems. Trained and licensed professionals can help anyone progress in the right direction and is better than trying to fix it on your own.

Some professionals offer group therapy specifically for people with a shopping addiction. Group therapy can be helpful because it makes people realize that they are not alone, and they can meet like-minded people making the same progress.

Luxury brand items signify prosperity. Many purchase and own it for status and empowerment, but some people get stuck on the idea of purchasing these things.
If you’re finding yourself stuck with shopaholic tendencies, let’s once again rethink what prosperity really means to you at a deeper level.

Getting stressed every day because of work… Feeling cooped up and claustrophobic spending too much time at home… Resenting yourself for not having anything to do on the weekends… Does this sound familiar?

If you’re a working member of society, it’s not uncommon to spend weekdays getting up in the morning, going to work, then come home only to watch TV or browse the internet before going to bed. On the weekends, you might wake up a little later than usual, and spend the day lounging around without any real plans.

Continuing to live such unstructured lifestyles poses a risk of losing our sense of well-being, potentially leading to a depressed mentality. In such situations, incorporating a daily walk routine can be an effective method of mental self-care. This article will examine and outline the benefits of daily walks, and how to make it a daily habit.

What is a Routine?

Image: Unsplash.com

A routine is “a mode of behavior acquired through repeated experiences, readily reproduced in similar situations, and a way of feeling and thinking that prepares for those actions”. In other words, it’s the capability to work on a particular action persistently without strain.

Why Are We Resistant to Routine Changes?

If we’ve never played soccer before, there are many obstacles to overcome before it becomes a part of our routine. We need to first learn the skills, prepare equipment, and find an appropriate playfield. It’s difficult to make a habit of something that requires a certain set of conditions like this.

There are several other factors that make daily routines and habits difficult to stick to.

Lack of enjoyment

Having trouble concentrating and getting distracted

Lack of motivation to continue because there’s no goal or end in sight

Feeling as if there’s little return for the time and effort you put in

Once any of the above points are felt, most people struggle to continue with their new routine, resulting in failure.

Mental Health Benefits of A Routine Walk

Image: Unsplash.com

Walking is a great way to get started without the need for equipment or space. It’s an activity that anyone can get into, at any time. The following are the benefits of making daily walks a part of your life.

1. A Change of Pace

Daily walks can serve as a change of pace in your day. According to one study, members of all ages and genders recognize exercise as being fun, helpful in relieving mental stress, and increasing concentration. Try to enjoy the scenery of the walk and avoid looking at your phone during walks. It could lead to new discoveries in your own neighborhood and bring mental clarity to some thoughts.

2. Making Friends

A walk can be a great opportunity to create connections with others. Once daily walks become a habit, you might find people who appear around your route at a similar time. You may end up forming friendships and more acquaintances by saying “hi” along the way. This will raise our spirits and sense of community, creating a positive effect on our mental health.

3. Getting in Shape

Routine walks create confidence. Walking is a form of exercise; inevitably, regular walks will help us get in better shape. As society becomes more convenient giving us fewer excuses to leave the house, it’s much easier to gain weight. This can lead to stress and a decrease in self-confidence. Regular walks can help burn calories, form healthier muscles, and boost self-confidence, all aiding to better health.

How to Make Walking a Habit

Image: Unsplash.com

Even after we understand the positive benefits, it’s still a challenge to create healthy habits. This is especially true for people who do not already exercise on a regular basis. Here are some tips on how to make walking a habit.

1. Never Push Too Hard

Try to find a “purpose”, but don’t set too many strict “goals.” To form any routine habit, it is important to hold a purpose. The purpose will determine the walking course, speed, and method of walking. A person who wants to experience joy through new discoveries within their neighborhood and interacting with people would have a different kind of walk from someone who wants to get in shape and work on self-confidence.

Be mindful not to set goals that are too specific. For example, committing to goals like setting how many “hours/miles every day” can actually be counterproductive. High goals set from the beginning can lead to high pressure, stress, and failure to form a habit. Start small in setting specific goals. For instance, a goal like, “I will enjoy my walk every day,” is a great simple place to start.

2. Have a Walking Buddy

The best way to make walking a habit is to work on it with a friend. One of the appeals of walking is that we can start on our own right away. However, for some people, walking alone is not enjoyable enough to form a habit.

Try forming a group of friends to walk with or find a walking buddy. When we have someone walk together with us, it becomes a more social habit that’s easier to adapt without a struggle. Additionally, communicating with others while exercising brightens our mood and will excite us towards the next walking session!

Regular Walks for a Healthy Mind

If you are in a mental rut, regular walks are excellent in turning your mental health around. Adaptation of the habit may not be immediate and challenging if we don’t exercise regularly. The key is to have a solid purpose and to work with buddies to make it an enjoyable habit.

Go for a walk today and see if you can make it part of a self-care routine!

How often do you check your email? Whether it’s business-related or personal, we all feel an obligation to check our emails and respond in a timely manner. On the other hand, our inbox can easily become saturated with an overflow of emails, silently pressuring us through the increasing “unread” volume. In these stressful moments, it is also important that we find ways to relieve stress that maintain our health and wellbeing.

How do emails impact our wellbeing and how can we create a healthy relationship with them?

What is Email Fatigue?

Worldwide, roughly 306.4 billion emails are sent and received each day in 2020. Email traffic is projected to increase even more each year. Moreover, according to research by Edison Software, 74% of Americans feel overwhelmed by the emails they receive. In terms of email volume, 33% feel stressed when they receive too many emails.

Email Fatigue is a term in email marketing, and describes a state where we feel overwhelmed with handling emails. Most of us have likely tried to combat email fatigue and relieve stress in one way or another. For example, closely managing inboxes, or spending hours deleting unwanted messages.

The Effects of Email Engagement

The University of British Columbia published a 2014 study that tested the frequency of email-checking and its effects on wellbeing. For one week, 124 adult participants limited their email-checking to three times a day. Then, for the following week, they checked their emails for an unlimited number of times. When email usage was limited, participants felt less stress, tension, and were less distracted by incoming emails. With lower stress levels, their overall health and wellbeing also improved. Consequently, participants experienced positive outcomes such as higher mindfulness, increased self-perceived productivity, and better sleep quality.

According to a 2017 Jobvite survey, on average, 45% of Americans tend to check their email after work hours every day, many at the request of their employers. Many of us feel pressured to check our emails frequently for one reason or another. Another study found that monitoring work emails during non-work hours is detrimental to the health and wellbeing of not only employees, but their spouse and family members as well. Even when a person didn’t actually work, the expectation of availability over emails during non-work hours increased stress, which then leads to strain and conflict within family relationships.

University of California, Irvine found that it takes an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds for someone to regain focus after a distraction. In other words, constantly tending to emails throughout the day requires multi-tasking and scatters our focus. If we are always checking our emails, we’re not only decreasing focus time, we’re also spending additional time trying to regain that focus.

Ways to Relieve Stress from Email Fatigue

Allocate a Daily Email Allowance

Each person is different in the way they need to prioritize the amount spent on emails. Consequently, each person requires different ways to relieve stress from email fatigue for their wellness.

One way to limit email engagement is by setting the times we allow ourselves to check emails throughout the day. For example, set yourself to only check and respond to emails 3 times per day: morning, afternoon, and evening. Setting specific times like 9:00 am, 12:00 pm, and 5:00 pm, can also be helpful.

Another way to set boundaries is by assessing how much time we really need each day for email and communication. How much time do you spend checking notifications while you’re at work, on the bus, or waiting in line? A lot of these small moments of checking can be gathered into a few time frames. Consequently, we can stay more present in what we’re doing. Once you’re done with a self-assessment, set a few brief checks (5-10 minutes max) per day where you can reply to urgent emails, but also allocate a specific amount of time in your day where you can really concentrate and deal with emails.

Try to keep the email tab closed and notifications on phones turned off otherwise for optimum stress relief!

Better Email Management

Managing emails can feel mentally overwhelming if there’s a lot to go through. Sometimes, it’s not about the time spent on emails, but a matter of how we manage our workflow dealing with emails. Try to use email managing tools, or set up a filtering system for your inbox in a way where you won’t feel overwhelmed when you check-in.

An easy way to feel less clutter is by unsubscribing. For example, spend some time going through newsletters subscriptions and social media email notification settings. Our engagement and attention are exactly what many businesses want, and they’re becoming smarter in reaching us. Therefore, cutting some of the unwanted solicitations will bring more peace to our inbox. This activity alone can be a cathartic way to relieve stress.

Take an Email Sabbatical for Your Wellness

We all need time off to disconnect and reset once in a while. For example, if constant emails are clearly affecting your health and wellbeing, an email sabbatical can be a great solution to relieve stress. Some people do this when they go on vacation. Communicate with your boss, co-workers, and collaborators in advance and finish all necessary important email communications before a sabbatical. There are ways to set emails to filter and forward to certain addresses or give automated responses so that people know when they’ll get a response. This may require some planning and understanding, but an email sabbatical can be a great way to rejuvenate!

Healthy Relationships with the Internet

Electronic communication has become so integrated into our lives, but the constant reach can tire us out. If you felt like limiting emails could help your mental health and wellbeing, this article on social media detox may also be helpful!

What is your favorite food? Pizza, tacos, pasta, sushi, Chinese food, etc., we all have a preference in what we eat every day. There are so many options we can choose from, but did you know that seafood, specifically blue-backed fish, could help improve your mental state?

Is Blue-Backed Fish Helpful for Depression?

Image: Unsplash

Blue-backed fish is a distinguished category of fish used in Japanese cuisine, usually white meat fish, that tends to be fatty and have a lighter flavor.

A team at the National Cancer Center Japan published research on how people who consumed blue-backed fish were at less risk for depression. This is because the omega-3 fatty acids in blue-backed fish (such as mackerels and sardines) are known to reduce the risk of depression.

Image: Unsplash

Omega-3 fatty acids have the following characteristics:

An Anti-inflammatory

A Neuroprotective

Regulates the immune system

Regulates neurotransmitters

Much research is ongoing on whether this is effective for depression and if there’s any relevance between omega-3 fatty acids and depression.

The human body cannot naturally produce omega-3 fatty acids, so the only way to gain their benefits is by consuming them. It’s an essential nutrient for us to live a healthy life. Omega-3 fatty acids also oxidize very fast so it is recommended to consume them with foods rich in beta-carotene such as green peppers, carrots, and pumpkins.

Be Careful of How Much Oil You Use!

Image: Unsplash

Research conducted by a Japanese team took 1181 mid-aged people to observe the effects of omega-3 fatty acids. Results showed that it did reduce the risk of depression, but on the other hand, after a certain amount consumed, there was no further effect. This is because the effects of omega 3 fatty acids can be neutralized by omega 6 fatty acids.

Omega 6 fatty acids, similar to omega 3, are nutrients that the body cannot self-produce. Soybean oil and sesame oil are known to contain omega 6 fatty acids. People who end up consuming high amounts of omega 6 fatty acids are usually getting it from eating a lot of stir fry foods.

Omega 3 and 6 work in a way that cancels out each other if one is consumed at a higher rate. Both contain an important nutrient value, but an unbalanced intake is tied to the risk of various lifestyle diseases. As a measure, Omega 3 and 6 should be taken at a rate of 4-5:1.

People With Depressive Tendencies Choose Fast Foods

Image: Unsplash

On the other hand, an unhealthy diet makes us prone to the risk of depression.

A study that followed 12,000 people for 6 years concluded that high consumption of the following foods resulted in a higher risk for depression in people:

Processed Meats

Sausages

Drinks with high sugar content and desserts

Junk food

These foods contain trans fatty acids also known as trans fat. The high intake of it is thought to contribute to depression.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), trans fat should only consist of 1% of your daily total food intake as a measure. Be mindful of ingredients that are considered unhealthy when consumed excessively.

Diets Change Our Mental and Physical Wellbeing

The charts below round up the categories of foods according to the nutritions mentioned above. (Figure 1 & 2)

Living through our current times can feel stressful at times. Therefore, it’s important that we learn how to care for our stress. Small stress factors can snowball into serious mental conditions if we don’t give it the attention that it needs.

In order to stay stress-free, we want to implement stress relievers in our everyday life. Our everyday beverage, coffee, is drawing attention for its mental and physical benefits.

Image: Unsplash

The Health Benefits of Coffee

The health benefits of coffee have been known for ages. People were already fond of coffee as a “remedy for sickness and a drink that keeps sleepiness away” in the Arabian peninsula more than 500 years ago.

Nowadays, find that coffee polyphenols, such as chlorogenic acids, are great antioxidants that hold anti-inflammatory properties. The aroma of coffee is also known to have relaxing effects. According to studies, when we smell coffee, the alpha waves (the relaxed state brain wave) in our brains increase. Additionally, coffee helps stimulate our parasympathetic nerve system, which helps promote better metabolism.

As you can see, recent studies are now starting to find scientific proof of the long-known benefits of coffee.

Image: Unsplash

The “3R’s” That Protects Our Mental State

Within the mental health field, it is said that the “3R’s” are important keys to follow in order to prevent mental illness and reduce stress.

The 3R’s:

Rest

Relaxation

Recreation

Continually following these 3R’s will help ease our everyday stress. There are many ways to implement the 3R’s. Recreational sports, hobbies, and traveling are effective but require dedicated time and planning. A simple easy habit of taking coffee breaks is just enough to achieve the 3R’s.

Image: Unsplash

Best Coffee Break Practices Using The 3R’s

To best practice the “3R’s,” we recommend that you get involved in the pouring process of the coffee instead of just drinking it.

1. The “Relaxation” benefits are as described earlier.

2. The process of boiling the water to pouring and brewing all contribute to the “Rest” factor experience, as the action distracts us from the focus on stress.

3. The origin of the beans, the kind of roast, water temperature, aroma, taste, and brewing process are all considered as a craft to be enjoyed. It is a “Recreational” experience when the enjoyment of these elements are combined to create the perfect cup!

There are plenty of coffee beans from around the world that are available at supermarkets, online, and at coffee shops. If you can, find beans that you like and mill it yourself. This will enhance more of the recreational aspect. Of course, if you are busy, just boiling water and pouring a simple cup that you enjoy is enough to experience the 3R’s.

By the way, the chlorogenic acid levels are higher when the coffee is properly poured over instead of using instant coffee. Although it is more time-consuming, we recommend going through the pour-over process if you want the full health benefits.

Image: Unplash

Increase Concentration and Productivity With Coffee

Coffee not only makes us feel relaxed, but it also increases our concentration and productivity.

A study showed that a brain wave called P300 increased when people smelled the aroma of coffee. This is the same brain wave that increases when we reach a concentrated state.

Scientists found that different coffee beans had different levels of relaxation and concentration effects. For example, Guatemalan and Jamaican Blue Mountain types showed stronger effects of relaxation, while Brazilian Santos and Sumatra Mandheling were more effective for concentration.

We can use this knowledge to our advantage and choose coffee beans based on whether we want to relax and reduce stress or concentrate and boost productivity.

Beware of Caffeine Overconsumption

Image: Unsplash

We’ve talked about the multiple benefits of coffee, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we should consume it limitlessly.

The caffeine in coffee helps gastric secretion which supports the digestion of food. However, drinking too much coffee on an empty stomach will secrete too much gastric juice and cause stomach irritation. Additionally, caffeine excites the nerve, so drinking it before bed can cause light sleep or sleeplessness. When the nerve is overstimulated, it could also cause dizziness, increased heart rate, physical discomforts, anxiety, and nervousness.

If we apply it to power naps, there are ways to use this mechanism of caffeine to our advantage.

The 3 Keys to the Most Effective Power Nap

For daily consumption, 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine per day appears to be safe for healthy adults. That’s roughly the amount of caffeine in 3 to 5 cups of coffee.

There are many health benefits to coffee, but keep in mind that moderation is always key.

Overeating your feelings because of daily stress? Or perhaps you have the tendency to light a cigarette when you feel restless at night. Some of us may resort to getting drunk on a daily basis to wash away uneasy feelings. These unhealthy lifestyle habits are often the trigger for nasty lifestyle diseases. Lifestyle diseases include heart disease, stroke, obesity, type II diabetes, etc., and are typically caused by prolonged negative and unhealthy habits, and resulting lack of a healthy lifestyle.

While lifestyle diseases (a physical disorder) and mental illness (a psychological disorder) may seem completely different, they are actually intricately connected in their onset. Furthermore, both are A mental disorder may cause a change in lifestyle, eventually triggering a lifestyle disease. Conversely, the presence of a lifestyle disease may affect one’s psyche, resulting in psychological duress. The answer to the question of “which came first: the chicken or the egg?” may differ on a case-by-case basis, but one thing for certain is that mental illnesses and lifestyle disorders are very closely connected. As such, a healthy lifestyle becomes increasingly important in maintaining longterm physical and mental wellness.

Psychological Disorders Connected to Unhealthy Lifestyle Habits

The following are only some examples of mental disorders, but many are often deeply connected to one’s lifestyle habits.

1. Depression

Depression is a psychological illness that causes a significant decrease in all motivation. While this disease can be genetically inherited and triggered by individual personalities or external factors, it can also be caused by a physical ailment. Studies have shown that difficulties or unpleasant symptoms in our daily life (including heart disease, asthma, high blood pressure, headaches, etc…) can increase the risk of developing depression by about 150~200%.

2. Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is a mental condition that often occurs in conjunction with depression. The symptoms of a panic attack includes heart palpitations and severe anxiety, accompanied by intense physical symptoms. Many often suffer from “anticipatory anxiety”(the fear of not knowing when an attack may occur), and “agoraphobia” (the fear of the outdoors). These fears can cause significant disruptions in our lives. The onset of a panic attack is often associated with taking large doses of caffeine to prevent drowsiness while working long hours. The disorder commonly occurs in adults at peak working age.

3. Sleep Disorders

Adequate rest plays a crucial part in the treatment of mental disorders. Sleep plays a big role in quality rest. Since sleep disorders often occur as a precursor to many diseases, chronic lack of sleep or insomnia may be an indication that there is underlying illness.

4. Dementia

Dementia is often thought as a condition strictly associated with the elderly, but it can also occur in people under the age of 65. It is often triggered by strokes, and irregular or unhealthy lifestyle habits can be a contributing factor in the cause.

Unhealthy Lifestyle Diseases in Relation to Mental Conditions

Now, let’s look at lifestyle diseases and how they relate to mental disorders.

1. Diabetes (Type II)

10% of diabetics are found to have major depression, while at least 30% have some symptoms of depression. Patients diagnosed with diabetes are firstly mentally upset at the revelation and feel a great shock at the loss of their health, potentially becoming a catalyst for a decline in healthy lifestyle habits. Treatment is long term and many factors can take a toll on a diabetic patient, including necessary lifestyle modifications, financial burdens of taking time off from work, and the burden on their families.

2. Obesity

It is well-known that obesity can trigger a myriad of diseases and gradual decline in healthy lifestyle. The loss of motivation resulting from mental disorders can lead to oversleeping and overeating, causing unintended weight gain. Some individuals may also experience weight gain through prescription medications.

3. High Blood Pressure

When a person suffers from a mental disorder, their stress tolerance tends to become lower, leading to more frequent drinking, smoking, and consumption of caffeine, amongst other lapses in typically healthy lifestyle habits. As a result, increased blood pressure may be observed.

What’s the Solution?

As we have seen, mental conditions and lifestyle diseases are intricately connected. However, in order to prevent both, the important first step is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Of all the lifestyle habits that lead to disease, smoking and drinking habits are said to be the two most harmful. First of all, it is vital to look closely at these two habits and if you are dependent on either of them, it’s important to break the chain.

Moreover, moderate exercise, eating a well-balanced diet with a variety of foods, being in touch with nature, and building good human relationships are all things that are generally considered good for a sustainably healthy lifestyle. These positive habits seem to be effective against both lifestyle-related diseases and mental disorders. It’s easy to think, “I don’t know if it really works,” “It’s a hassle,” or “I don’t have time for that in my daily life,” but it’s important to try including these activities in our lives.

We can easily get stuck in a vicious cycle when one disease triggers another. For starters, try going on a short walk, try cutting back on drinking, or really anything that’s doable within your means. It’s never too late to start living a healthy lifestyle. The moment we acknowledge is the moment to start living a healthy lifestyle!

Have you ever heard of the phenomenon known as the “Proust Effect”? It is a phenomenon in which memories and emotions are evoked through the trigger of a scent. It was named after a scene from Marcel Proust’s novel, In Search of Lost Time, where the protagonist is reminded of his past by the scent of a madeleine.

Unlike other senses, our sense of smell is connected directly to the limbic system, which is responsible for emotions. As such, it’s more likely to evoke emotions. Let us introduce you to the effects of scents!

The Relaxing Effects of Scents

Maintaining Focus

Scents can be effective in situations where concentration is required. In a study of scent stimulation and its effects, participants were asked to perform a series of simplistic tasks. As a result, participants exposed to scents showed a tendency of time reduction on subsequent task engagements. Repetition of monotonous tasks usually reduce concentration in participants, but the scent was believed to help restore this concentration.

In the same experiment, results also showed that scents helped with drowsiness during tasks. From these results, some believe that scented car fresheners are useful for long-distance drives where drowsiness is easily induced due to the unchanging landscape. Smelling a scent helps us recover from fatigue and prevents us from falling asleep.

Scents Can Improve Our Quality of Life

In addition, scents have been shown to improve mental health. As an example, let’s look at a study of Japanese university students. In this study, students who often used the Student Counseling Room were asked to smell their favorite scent every morning for a week. Researchers investigated the subsequent changes in their quality of life and mental health.

Prior to the study, these students who used the counseling room had the tendency of poor quality sleep, less physical activity, and more anxiety than those who did not use the counseling room. In addition, their mental health and life quality tended to score lower. However, through this experiment, these characteristics continued to improve until there was no quantifiable difference between them and the students who did not typically use the counseling room. It’s amazing how much change occurs when we simply smell a scent that we favor.

Once a Day is All You Need

What’s interesting about the study mentioned above is not just the effect of the scent itself. The key point here is that they were only asked to smell their favorite scent once a day in the morning for a week, yet it produced more than one benefit.

We could use an aroma diffuser or light an aroma candle at home to fill the room with your favorite scent, but this can be unexpectedly tedious, and we might forget some days. What we can do is transfer our favorite aroma into a portable spray bottle for an easy and effortless alternative to carry around.

Different Scents for Different Occasions

Citrus for Stress Reduction

Citrus scents, such as lemon and grapefruit can be refreshing. They also help reduce stress and improve mood. In one experiment, grapefruit scents were presented to subjects who felt stressed after performing a simple task. Researchers measured the participants’ stress levels based on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and found that their anxiety decreased more than before they had performed the task (Figure 1 below). It is likely that grapefruit had an effect on the reduction of anxiety. Similarly, it also had an effect of increased relaxation.

If you are someone who gets nervous before a presentation or meeting, smelling citrus-based fragrances may help you feel a little more relaxed.

Lavender for Improved Focus

Lavender is recommended when we struggle to keep our focus. In a study that utilized lavender scents, it was shown to improve work efficiency and reduce mistakes. Lavender scent activates the parasympathetic nervous system, thus improving concentration.

In addition, lavender fragrance is proven effective even when the scent is very faint. While lavendar could help improve our concentration, keep in mind that wearing too much perfume can cause discomfort to those around us who are sensitive to smell . A little goes a long way!
