Do you ever just feel tired of your daily life? Do you just want to shut everything out so that you can relax and find some sanity? If your answer is yes, you may be overdue for a mental health retreat.

Most of us get caught up with our multi-tasked busy lives, and fantasize about escaping just for a while. Perhaps this is a natural response to all the stressors that weigh on us every day. However, science also says that “escaping” for a while is exactly what we should be doing!

Here is how a mental health retreat can be helpful in rebooting your life.

Image: Unsplash

What Is A Mental Health Retreat?

A mental health retreat typically uses complementary and alternative therapies within a holistic residential setting. The principal purpose is to improve a person’s well-being through the stay. “Wellness retreats” and “wellness tourism” are basically the same thing with just a different name to call it.

The concept of it is so diverse that it can be for any amount of time in any way that allows you to focus on your well-being. A quick retreat in the city might be an evening at a spa that allows deep rest through a hot tub or massage. A more extensive retreat might be for a few days or more at a remote location in nature where they offer extensive programs that help enhance the wellness experience.

Image: Unsplash

Besides, getting away for a while is proven to relieve stress in itself.

Getting Away: Stress-Relief Through Traveling

How Effective Is a Mental Health Retreat?

A study in 2017 looked at participants who went on a one-week retreat to measure the effectiveness of a retreat. The retreat included aromatherapy, health measures, mental health-related questionnaires, and various tests to measure a person’s well-being.

Results showed significant improvement in a person’s wellbeing after a one-week retreat and the positive effects sustained for 6 weeks. As for physical benefits, it reduced weight, abdominal circumference, improved blood pressure, and sleep quality. There were significantly improved results in the depression anxiety stress scale and mood state tests as well.

This means that a mental health retreat can refresh a person enough to get them through for a while after they return.

Image: Unsplash

3 Elements to Enhance A Mental Health Retreat

Here are 3 elements to look out for when you consider planning for a mental health retreat. If it’s difficult to afford (time and money-wise) a full getaway right now, you can still incorporate these elements in your life in small ways to mimic a mini-retreat within your everyday life.

Image: Unsplash

Connect With Nature

Nature heals, soothes, and restores our wellbeing. Being in nature or just even viewing an image of nature reduces anger, fear, and stress while increasing pleasant feelings.

Just a 40-minute walk in the forest improves mood and feelings of health and robustness. Exposure to nature contributes to better physical wellbeing, boosts immune function, improves creativity, reduces blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and production of stress hormones.

Pick a mental health retreat that allows you to indulge in nature or go for a short walk in nature. Go barefoot and feel the ground or dip your feet in the ocean. Even if it’s for a short period, simple direct engagements with nature can help recharge your mind and body.

Image: Unsplash

Greening your office space can also help make you feel relaxed. Perhaps you can create a little mental health retreat in the corner of your room with plants for a relaxing effect.

A Healthy Diet

Our health is affected by what we eat. It’s not only physical, it can affect us mentally too. Science suggests that a plant-based diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, and healthy proteins lowers the risk of weight gain and chronic disease.

There are retreat programs that provide healthy meals that help with dietary choices and eating habits. Eating healthy meals for a certain duration will give us a push in a healthier direction.

If a mental health retreat is difficult, you can go on a healthy diet for a few days to self-activate a reset.

Image: Unsplash

Hydrotherapy – Soak Yourself in Water

Did you know that soaking in water is beneficial for your health and wellbeing? Using water as therapeutic treatment is called hydrotherapy, water therapy, aquatic therapy, pool therapy, or balneotherapy.

According to scientific evidence, hydrotherapy improves immunity, management of pain, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, asthma, anorectal disorders, mood, fatigue, anxiety, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, hyperthermia, labor, etc.

The different effects on various systems of the body depend on the temperature of water and water quality.

Find a spa nearby for a mental health retreat experience or simply fill up your tub at home. If you like nature, perhaps an environment where you can swim in the ocean or lake would be nice. Hot-spring water can enhance health benefits with its mineral components in the water.

Image: Unsplash

A Mental Health Retreat for a Relaxing Time-Off

Stress can build up no matter what kind of environment we’re in. It’s important to notice the signs and take time off when you feel strained. Sometimes a little getaway through a retreat is all we need to come back more energized. Plan ahead and make sure to schedule time off for your mental health!

Image: Unsplash

Does your mind ever just feel tired from overstimulation?

In the modern age of social media, streaming services, and mobile games, it’s very easy to keep our minds constantly occupied with inane distractions. However, this also means that we are more susceptible to overstimulation. Our brain’s ability to concentrate on something is finite. Once we breach that threshold, we risk falling into attention fatigue. In the same way that physical workouts tire you out, a prolonged state of mental fatigue can impact physical and cognitive functioning.

Recent research shows that practicing “soft fascination” can help replenish and refresh the energy levels of your mind.

Image: Unsplash

The Dangers of Attention Fatigue

Attention fatigue, sometimes referred to as DAF (Directed Attention Fatigue), occurs when you overuse your brain’s filtering ability. “Directed attention” (or voluntary attention) is the intentional and specific concentration on an object, in contrast to “involuntary attention,” which is attention that requires no effort. Typically, our brain’s filtering ability helps us deal with distractions, in order to maintain attention on a task.

In simple words, attention fatigue is a result of your brain being bombarded with “too much” – too much information, too much stimulation, too much stress, etc. While attention fatigue is not permanent or incurable, it can still impact your day-to-day functioning.

Attention fatigue inhibits various brain processes, such as executive functioning, which usually helps with planning ahead, making decisions, and exercising good judgment. Confusion, restlessness, forgetfulness, and short-tempers are more likely to occur as well. People also report feeling more impulsive, reckless, and unattuned to social cues when experiencing attention fatigue.

If you ever feel like your brain is overloaded, you may be experiencing attention fatigue. In this case, it’s important to let your brain rest and recover. One of the best ways to achieve this is through the practice of soft fascination.

Image: Unsplash

What is Soft Fascination?

First, let us differentiate between “hard” and “soft” fascination.

Hard Fascination: When you focus your attention on an activity that is highly stimulating

Soft Fascination: When your attention is maintained by an activity that is less stimulating

Another important distinction between the two is that soft fascination provides the opportunity to reflect and introspect. In contrast, with hard fascination, you are typically too absorbed in the activity to pause and take a breath. In other words, hard fascination helps to entertain and reduce boredom, while soft fascination entails reflecting on and making sense of the activity.

Image: Unsplash

Soft fascination is frequently researched in relation to Attention Restoration Theory (ART), a psychological concept that exposure to nature helps the brain in restoring its ability to focus and concentrate. Spending time out in nature helps relax the brain’s frontal lobe, which alleviates the symptoms of attention fatigue. Nature is ideal for practicing soft fascination because it is just stimulating enough to gently engage the brain without forcing hard concentration. The natural sounds and scenery coax our involuntary attention without requiring any intentional focus. Moreover, ART theorizes that exercising involuntary attention helps restore directed attention and any fatigue it has caused.

Image: Unsplash

How to Practice Soft Fascination

As mentioned above, the best recommended practice for soft fascination is to go out into nature. Listen to the soft sounds – the chirping birds, the rustling leaves, the murmuring river – to take in the scenery. Notice the different colors, shapes, sounds, and smells. Environments that encourage soft fascination through exploring – such as hiking, or taking a walk in the forest – will gently stimulate your attention. At the same time, it still allows room for introspection and quiet thought. This allows for the opportunity to reflect on personal problems without any distractions that may dominate the attention.

If you don’t have easy access to nature, it is still worthwhile to just listen to the sounds of nature. The internet has various resources for all sorts of nature sounds, such as lightning storms or rainforest ambiance. Try to find something that you like, lie down, and close your eyes.

Mindfulness in Soft Fascination

If soft fascination still feels like a foreign concept, consider practicing mindfulness first. Mindfulness can help you become more accustomed to the practice of soft fascination, allowing for an experience akin to meditation.

Use Soft Fascination to Your Advantage

Your brain needs some idle time in order to rest and recover. This is especially true if you are constantly overstimulated on a daily basis through smartphones, TVs, and the internet. Sometimes, even reading a book requires too much effort from the brain. Moreover, pushing yourself too hard is never a good idea. Prolonged attention fatigue can cause functional issues that may lead to even more stress and anxiety. It’s important to let your brain rest when it needs a break.

If you ever feel overwhelmed from having too much on your plate, try to find some time to practice soft fascination!

How well can you adapt to stress?

Environment, relationships, family, career, school, etc… There are many unpredictable changes that happen in life. Some of it is a matter of time until you adapt to the situation, others are opportunities of lessons for a person to grow, and some cases lead down to a path of chronic stress and trauma.

Is there a better way to build stress tolerance for all that happens in life? The answer is yes. The human brain is made to learn and navigate through learned experiences and stress is no different. In this post, we will explain how the brain processes stress.

Image: Unsplash

How the Body Responds: Stability vs. Change

The Capability to Keep Things Stable: Homeostasis

Our bodies generally have an average physical standard to maintain.

For example, your average temperature, average blood pressure, and the pressure to keep body fluids flowing throughout the body, theses are all kept at a standard of each person. This capability to keep things stable is called Homeostasis.

However, our physical body changes its standard when there’s a breakthrough change. As we grow, our physical standards change from a baby to adulthood. Another simple way to look at it is to notice what happens when we continually stimulate the body through exercises. There is always a way to break through our current homeostasis.

Image: Unsplash

The Brain’s Capability to Change: Neuroplasticity

We have the ability to change as a result of the various stressful experiences we go through.

Our brain determines what experience is stressful or how a person should cope with it. This capability is called Neuroplasticity (also known as brain plasticity) where the neural networks in the brain change and adapt through growth and reorganization. These functional and structural changes range from individual neuron pathways to systematic adjustments.

Image: Unsplash

Stress: Allostasis and Allostatic Load

If we have a system in place that keeps our body stable, what keeps it intact or causes the breakthrough and adaptation for change?

Allostasis

The driving force that pushes for an adaptive process forward is called Allostasis. Allostasis is the “stress” that impacts the production of mediators such as adrenalin, cortisol, and other chemical messengers. The response of these mediators promotes adaptation to the acute stress we experience.

Once stress (allostasis) hits us, the body responds by creating a new baseline of homeostasis so that it can anticipate and prepare for the next coming stress. Essentially, the body works naturally like an AI (Artificial Intelligence) where it learns from previous experiences. Once new homeostasis is created, we are capable of tolerating or handling the same situation with less stress.

Image: Unsplash

Allostatic Load

On the other hand, allostasis can change to allostatic load.

The changes and stressors that impact our life can have both positive and negative effects. Excessive stress over a long period of time can have detrimental effects on the body and permanently alter the architecture of the brain. This negative effect is called the Allostatic Load.

Allostatic overload keeps us “stressed” while it wears and tears away at the body and brain. This happens when our body undergoes constant stress while the homeostasis fails to create a new baseline to adapt.

Image: Unsplash

The 4 Types of Stress That Becomes Allostatic Load

There are 4 circumstances as to why the allostasis can change into allostatic load:

Repeated “hits” from multiple stressors

Difficulties in adaptation

Delayed shutdowns and prolonged responses in the aftermath of the stress incident

Inadequate response leads to compensatory hyperactivity of other mediators

The best way to prevent these circumstances is by learning how to mitigate stress through techniques that we can practice every day.

Image: Unsplash

An “Active Recovery” From Stress

Stress mitigation through physical activity is called Active Recovery. Active recovery is said to be the best way to prevent allostasis from becoming allostatic load.

There are no strict measures on what counts as active recovery, but generally speaking, you want to keep a 30 minute physical activity that will keep 70% of your maximum heart rate. This includes running, swimming, biking, yoga, dance, etc. When an enjoyable activity increases the heart rate and fully uses the brain and muscle, it relaxes our mental state more than if we just rested. This allows a state where we can prepare to welcome the next stressful event.

Stress Relieving Exercises Are Important For Your Wellbeing

If incorporating a rigorous exercise routine seems difficult for you right now, you can start by just taking daily walks around your neighborhood.

A Walk a Day Keeps Negativity at Bay!

If “exercise” sounds less exciting, you can always take on an active hobby like dancing. Music that heightens the mood and a sense of accomplishment that comes from learning a new skill will surely satisfy those that want a sense of stimulation and growth.

Is Stress Blocking Your Weight Loss Journey?
Learn How to Cope With Stress

Review your day to see how you can incorporate small actions to break your thoughts away from stress. At work, you should never keep still in your office chair for hours. If you want to use allostasis to your advantage, try to stand up and stretch at least once an hour. Talk to your coworkers, friends, or family if something is bothering you. Small stress relief habits will prevent allostasis from becoming allostatic load.

As long as we can keep stress at healthy manageable levels, we can use it to our advantage to strengthen our brain for future life adversities.

Image: Unsplash

We often hear the term “coaching,” especially with many professionals offering services that try to lead others to success. However, some may have reservations about the idea of coaching because of its widely applicable range of practice. In the mental wellness realm, trained life coaches can effectively equip people with better self-help skills while guiding clients through a self-development journey.

In this post, we will introduce the idea of having a life coach and its merits.

What is A Life Coach?

Image: Unsplash.com

A life coach encourages conversations that promote reflection and answers from within. They also assist through necessary steps to achieve a client’s personal goal. Life coaches are a type of wellness professionals who help people attain greater fulfillment through communication and mentorship.

The estimated that there were approximately 71,000 coach practitioners in 2019 globally. This was a 33% increase compared to the 2015 estimate, as coach services gain popularity around the world.

The Difference Between Coaching and Counseling

Similar to coaching is the term counseling. The two have elements that overlap, although coaching is action-oriented while counseling is coping-oriented.

Coaching

Counseling

-Helps you recognize what you think
-Helps you set and achieve goals
-Challenges you frequently
-Focuses exclusively on present & future
-Focuses on your potential
-Trained to help clients move forward
-Recognizes the old core beliefs stopping you
-Service is paid for personally

-Helps you realize how you feel
-Helps recognize and solve your problems
-Provides supports with empathy & understanding
-Focuses on past, present, and future
-Focuses on being at peace with yourself & life
-Trained in mental health conditions
-Recognizes mental health conditions holding you back
-Service may be covered by work insurance.

What Kind of People Benefit From A Life Coach?

A life coach can lead us to answers and perspectives that we wouldn’t have found on our own. If you’re the following type of person, you can benefit from a personal life coach:

Image: Unsplash.com

People Who Want Change

We all have different struggles; family, friends, romantic, career, academics, etc. If you’re looking for a change but don’t know where to start, a coach can be helpful. On the other hand, if you’re happy with life as it is and don’t need much change, a coach may feel like a waste of time.

People Facing Stressful Situations

Are you feeling stressed from work or school? A coach can set you on a more mentally sound path. One university study reports that coaching helps with stress reduction. A coach can guide you through finding the stress cause and advise the best approach. This helps set a better trajectory towards recovery and a healthier mental state.

A coach not only “teaches” you, but helps you recognize what YOU think. They help you take your own initiative towards making better decisions. The following are some of the benefits to having a life coach:

The Ability to Proactively Solve Problems

Coaching helps draw out answers that are deep within us. To do this, a coach will repeat dialogues focused on what possible blocks are, what to do, and how to plan towards a goal. A client can transform their mindset from passive to proactive through the repetitive exercises and learn how to face challenging circumstances.

Better Communication Skills

Excellent communication skills are vital in any kind of working environment. Repeated coaching sessions train clients to become better communicators. It also helps a client better understand the ‘intentions’ behind what others are trying to communicate. Communication skills gained through sessions will help anyone become a more proficient business person.

Entering ‘the Zone’ for Optimal Performance

A ‘zone’ describes a hyper-concentrated state where we become fully immersed in whatever we are doing. Anyone can ‘enter the zone’ through sports, business, academics, or hobbies.

Coaching sessions can help people gain clarity in how to visualize a path to success. The sessions help with continual positive thinking which makes it easier for a person to enter a flow state to give optimal performance. A positive mindset also combats negativity to keep our mental states calm.

As we face growing responsibilities, we naturally find ourselves multi-tasking more and more. Sometimes we feel dizzy and overwhelmed from having to constantly filter through and process information. What does it mean to “feel dizzy” when there’s a lot going on and what kind of impact does mental stress have on our visual function?

In this post, we will explore the correlation between our eyes and mental wellbeing.

How Stress Affects Your Eyes

As the saying “the eyes are the window to the soul” implies, there have always been speculations about the connection between the eye and our minds. It’s believed that stress causes the eye to either rapidly move or tense up.

Image: Unsplash.com

Feeling Dizzy

According to one study targeting university students, when students were asked to do quick calculations continually, their eye movements increased in horizontal movement. This could imply that when we are concentrating on a fixed situation, we actually do feel dizzy. Rapid eye movement requires eye muscle activity, which in turn can strain the eyes.

Source: Unsplash.com

Tense Eyes

The autonomic nervous system in our body greatly impacts our mental wellbeing. The sympathetic division keeps us active, preparing for fight or flight reactions, while the parasympathetic division restores the body to a state of calm. Our mental balance is sustained through these two divisions working in harmony. An off-balance state of an autonomic nervous system will affect the mental and physical in some way.

Continual long hours of work keeps the sympathetic nerves active over a long period of time. This creates a tense and nervous body.

It’s not rare to find ourselves staring into our smartphones or TV when we’re feeling down, yet we need to rest our eyes if they feel tense. Tense eyes are a sign of low blood circulation and this can lead to the eyes feeling more strained.

Source: Unsplash.com

How to Recover From Eye Strain

Whether the cause is mental or physical, the best way to fix eye strain is to relax and not use the eyes. Reading a book or watching TV can be relaxing, but we recommend the following activities for eye strain issues:

Image: Unsplash.com

1. Rest The Eyes

First and foremost, rest your eyes. Rest gives the strained eyes the ability to recover.

You can do this by getting adequate sleep at night. Sleep allows the eyes to physically rest while letting the parasympathetic nervous system work for the body to restore itself. Even if a huge load of stress disrupts our whole nervous system, sleeping should help recover both the mind and body.

Source: Unsplash.com

Another method to try is limiting the usage of smartphones and TV. Screens on electronic devices emit “blue light” known to keep our eyes in hyper-focus while disrupting the body from going into a deep sleep state. It’s impossible to completely cut usage of electronic devices, but we can ease the harmful effects by limiting electronics one hour before bed or by using glasses that cut out the blue UV rays.

2. Look Far Away

Looking far out into the distance helps the eye muscles relax. If you’re constantly looking at a screen for work, make sure to look out the window from time to time. Some urban environments make it difficult to access long distant views, but just looking afar while walking will help with eye strain. A relaxing walk can help uplift our moods too!

A Walk a Day Keeps Negativity at Bay!

3. Eye Hydration

Dry eyes can cause eye strain. When eye muscle movement becomes strenuous, our eyes become dry and strained. An easy way to fix this is by hydrating the eyes with eye drops or pressing pressure points around the eyes.

Source: Unsplash.com

Other methods to try:

Set computer screens lower than eye level – looking down makes it easier for the eyes to blink which helps with eye hydration

Use a humidifier in the room and set the humidity to 60%

Try conscious blinking throughout the day – we forget to blink when we’re focused

Drink lots of water and keep the body hydrated

Watch movies or read books that make you cry

You don’t have to make drastic changes to hydrate your eyes. Small conscious changes can make a big difference.

“Cry Sessions” Help with Stress and Depression

Fixing Strained Eyes Fixes Other Issues

If your eyes feel strained, it could be because of your mental state. Our physical and mental response to any given situation can be complex, so fixing a simple eye strain issue can lead to solving other issues surrounding us.
If our eyes are the window to the soul, let’s make sure we keep them healthy to reflect our beautiful souls!

Work can take a heavy toll on our mental well-being. Once we start to dread going to work or fall mentally ill to a point where we need a mental health leave or “stress leave”, it takes courage to return back into the workforce.

Our mental capacity is like a cup, where if too much water (stress) is poured in, it overflows. High intensities of stress can lead to depression and other mental illnesses where it makes it hard for us to keep working. Often times this leads to a much-needed stress leave where we take time off to recharge our spirits.

This post is for anyone who’s considering a return to work after a career break due to their mental health.

The Challenges After a Stress Leave

Source：Unsplash.com

A common pitfall is to treat all career breaks equally. Paternity or maternity leave is very different from leaves due to mental health issues and should be treated accordingly. Research claims that long durations of stress leaves taken more than 3 times increase difficulties for a healthy return.

Let’s look at some of the challenges that come after a stress leave.

Mental Recovery Is Difficult to Measure

Source: Unsplash.com

Mental recovery is usually assessed by a doctor, but that doctor’s assessment still relies on their personal subjective opinion in the end. Unlike physical wellness, mental well-being is difficult to measure recovery by definitive numbers.

One might seem healthy and well, yet have a high tendency to suppress depression whether conscious or unconscious. This makes assessments of a person more complicated, even for mental health professionals.

Returning to work before full recovery should be avoided. If a person ends up acting okay when they’re not, it risks more harm.

Source: Unsplash.com

Mental Health Is a Constant Journey

Full recovery from depression and other serious mental illnesses is known to be difficult. While things could seem all better, oftentimes it can just be a state of temporary remission. It’s not rare for an incident or flashback to trigger symptoms to re-emerge.

For example, if constant harassment from a boss leads to enough mental health issues for a person to take a break from work, this person can struggle or be triggered easily through their relationships with future bosses when they return to work again.

We should understand that mental health recovery can be a long journey that requires patience and coping skills.

Rushing Back to Work After Stress Leave

Source: Unsplash.com

People who are vulnerable to mental health pitfalls can be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) or have the tendency to prioritize others before themselves. This tendency makes them worry about their job or co-workers before themselves and pushes them back to work earlier to prioritize others. This results in an unsuccessful return as the person never took the time to adequately recover.

Any plans of returning to work should be given generous time. Most times, it’s more time than we ‘think’ we need.

Career Blanks Can Affect Our Self-Esteem

A career blank can affect our self-esteem and create worries about our future job prospects. For many, it can be a challenge to see their break in a positive light when they are ready to return to work. People who already struggle with mental health issues tend to fall into the belief that they had to “downgrade” or that they are “unwanted.”

Tips for Smooth Work Transitions

Source：Unsplash.com

As mentioned above, there are many challenges in returning to work after extended mental health leave. It’s more unlikely we have everything perfectly figured out before going back to work, so the focus should be on mitigating these challenges.

Here are some tips on how to make a smooth transition back to work:

Create Relationships Outside of Work

If the work environment is a big factor for mental stress, create relationships outside of work. Joining communities outside of work can be a great outlet when you’re feeling down. The more we have family, friends, and romantic partners that support us, the more we can share our feelings and focus on other fun activities. An escape community from ‘work thoughts’ is always great to have and will help mental recovery.

Source: Unsplash.com

Don’t Rush to Get Back to Work

As mentioned above, rushing back to work is not a good idea, as it can lead to needing a break again soon. It’s normal to want to go back to work due to financial concerns, societal pressure to work, or from worries of leaving work for long durations.

It’s hard to expect a full recovery of our mental health right away. Even if when you feel ready, stop for a minute and ask for a second opinion. Take slow steps to assure a healthy return to work.

Create Distance From Triggers

Every person has a different reason why they might have needed a stress leave. It can be anything from work relationships, unfit job positions, to harsh working environments, etc. If you understand the initial cause, try to create a distance from your possible triggers. Psychological triggers can be avoided if we set proper boundaries from the potential cause.

Take Slow Gradual Steps Back to Work

In our stressful modern society, it’s not uncommon to need a break from work due to mental health issues. If you’ve already taken a career break and feel ready to go back to work, try to keep these challenges and tips in mind as you make decisions moving forward.

After a long career break, the best way to get back into the groove of work is through slow and gradual steps.

“I just tripped on the stairs over there.”
“I messed up at work today.”
When we experience something negative or embarrassing, many of us feel the need to share it with someone else. In other words, we seek emotional support for the betterment of our mental health. This phenomenon has been studied from various scientific perspectives.

Negative Experiences are a Part of Life

A Japanese university experimented to see how people socially share their experiences when they see images that evoke unpleasant feelings. When participants were left alone in a waiting room with a friend after seeing the unpleasant images, 95.3% of them told their friends about the images. Even when they were told not to disclose, 53% of them ended up talking about their experience a week later. Our desire to share bad experiences with others is so strong, and we struggle to keep it to ourselves.

In clinical psychology, verbalization of emotions is believed to have a cathartic effect that removes anxiety and tensions. Verbalizing emotions is also linked to better mental health, as it has significant implications for depression recovery. People seem to derive these effects from “cognitive” and “interpersonal” aspects of this behavior, which we will discuss below.

Emotional Support Stabilizes Our Feelings

Tough times can make us feel frustrated and anxious. When these experiences occur, our trust, self-image, perception of others, and the world can be shaken. We all desire to sort out what happened, why it happened, and know what kind of social support we can get. When there’s something out of our control, we feel the need to discuss it with peers so that we can restore our faith again. Receiving the emotional support from our peers makes us feel better about the mistakes we made. These are the “cognitive” reasons we vent our feelings to others.

Staying Connected to Society

When we’re upset, we tend to focus on ourselves and our negative experiences. As a result, we tend to forget about the rest of the world. We try to recover from the loneliness we experience during these times by sharing our negative experiences with friends and family. Our desire to communicate stems from wanting society to know how we’re feeling and to feel accepted through emotional support. This is the “interpersonal” reason why we talk about painful things.

Do We Want to Share Our Embarrassment?

It’s not rare to share the little embarrassing things that we experience. Like when we mess up during a presentation or trip on a flat surface. A Japanese university set to find out if and when students would talk to others about their saddest, angriest, and most embarrassing experiences. Researchers expected results to show that participants seldom shared their embarrassing experiences. However, 71.4 % of participants claimed to share their most embarrassing experiences with others. Also, more than half shared their experience almost immediately after it happened.

Everybody Shares Their Feelings with Others

Sharing feelings is part of our universal behavior. A social study of shared emotional behavior across six countries, including Belgium and Suriname, found no differences by country, age, or gender, in the way that humans shared emotions. Talking about embarrassing or upsetting occurrences seems to be a common phenomenon for men and women of all ages and backgrounds worldwide.

Nevertheless, it can be somewhat stressful for a listener to hear someone’s negative experience, as well as to provide undivided emotional support. It’s wiser to spread your venting among several people rather than dumping everything onto just one person.

Sharing difficult or embarrassing experiences is natural. We should always support our circle of family and friends to help each other get through these experiences.

Why is Giving Thanks Good for Your Wellbeing?

Gratitude is associated with all sorts of positive emotions and we generally regard it as a good thing, but do you actually know how a “thank you” creates neurological change? Maybe you’ve already tried to cultivate daily habits of giving thanks because you heard it was a healthy habit. However, maybe it didn’t stick, or perhaps you just want to know more to better practice it. Either way, once you understand how the effects work, it may give you a better chance in making that permanent transformation you’ve been needing. Consequently, there is a lot of science on giving thanks and its promotion for better mental wellbeing. Below, I will explain the shifts created through neurological changes when we give thanks to others.

“Gratitude is a vaccine, an antitoxin, and an antiseptic.”
– John Henry Jowett

The Neuroscience that Cultivates Positivity

How does giving thanks work with our mental and physical wellbeing? In 2015, Indiana University conducted a study on how expressing gratitude alters neural activity in the brain for people with anxiety and depression. As a result, gratitude exercises activated neural pathways of the brain correlated to empathy. Furthermore, it had a significant impact on the neuromodulation of the medial prefrontal cortex area. ‘Neuromodulation’ is the alteration of cellular and synaptic properties of neurons that allow change in neurotransmissions. Unlike individual neurons, neuromodulators have the power to affect entire brain regions.

Giving thanks is considered a non-medical “anti-depressant” to some because it naturally affects our mood. The following parts of the brain have measurable changes when we switch into gratitude mode:

Giving Thanks Increases Dopamine & Serotonin

Dopamine is the feel-good neurochemical in our brain that makes us feel pleasure. Above all, it’s responsible for our feeling of happiness, optimism, motivation, focus, and alertness. On the other hand, serotonin is considered the harmonizing ‘mood stabilizer’ in our brain that regulates our anxiety and mood. For example, individuals with depression tend to lack in serotonin. An increase in both dopamine and serotonin, which are known as our ‘happy chemicals’, leads to happiness, better memory, and better sleep.

Giving Thanks Activates the Prefrontal Cortex

Scientists have found that the medial prefrontal cortex is vital in feeling empathy towards others. In fact, this region of the brain is a processing hub that evaluates risk and rewards. Moreover, it connects to the deeper parts of our brain that produce kicks of pleasurable neurochemicals under the right circumstances. In addition, the ventral and medial regions of the prefrontal cortex abstractly represent the brain area that helps with social processing, complex reasoning, and how we represent ourselves. What’s more, several MRI studies show that continual practice in acts of gratitude activates this ventromedial prefrontal cortex. This part is known to function when we relieve pain, nurture empathy, show prosocial behaviors, and feel satisfaction in life.

Giving Thanks Activates the Hypothalamus

In studies, subjects who showed more gratitude overall had high activity in the hypothalamus. While the hypothalamus is a very small part of the brain in size, it controls essential bodily functions. For example, control in appetite, body temperature regulation, sleep cycles, hormones, and emotional response. It also influences our metabolism and stress levels. For instance, appreciative thoughts can trigger ‘good’ hormones and positively affect the immune system. High activity in the hypothalamus leads to many improvements in the physical benefits of giving thanks, such as better heart rate, blood pressure, and sleep.

Gratitude Builds Resilience to Stress & Pain

Gratitude can enhance the good in our lives, but what about the bad? Remarkably, giving thanks makes us more resilient to stress and pain, therefore helping us cope with difficulties in our life. This seems to be accompanied by the aforementioned neurological shift that occurs when our minds enter a positive state.

In addition, multiple studies indicate that giving thanks can help with mental wellbeing. For example, this includes decrease in suicidal thoughts, resilience to traumatic events, stronger coping strategies towards stress, protection from burnouts, and increase in self-esteem. Conscious practice in giving thanks can build a strong and healthy psychological mentality that can soften the hardship when it hits. In fact, life crises can also in-turn make us a more grateful person too. For example, try to remember the bad times, and how you endured and survived that situation. Then, compare that to where you are in life now. This can aid as a means to enhance your sense of gratitude and happiness. Therefore, looking at past negative memories from the perspective of growth and gratitude can help us through upcoming challenges in life.

Stronger Community Through Giving Thanks

As mentioned above, when our ventromedial prefrontal cortex is activated through giving thanks, altruism (the selfless concern for other people’s wellbeing over yourself), and empathy grow. Simply feeling grateful, empathetically understanding other perspectives, recognizing the beauty in social interactions, and giving more to people can naturally create better relationships. Data also suggest that expressing gratitude lights up our “mu-opioid” (a receptor that triggers our brain’s reward system), which is the same part that activates during close interpersonal touch and relief from pain. In other words, feeling grateful towards others creates a more relaxed, stress-free environment for us and the capacity to bond with others.

Research indicates giving thanks can also create positive influences on relationships. For example, some studies show that one’s grateful attitude towards a person directly correlates with the strength of the relationship and feeling of integration. In other words, the attitude of giving and focusing on others makes a person more desirable, and promotes socially inclusive behaviors. For the same reason, long-term relationships, both in friendship and partnership, expressed feeling more connected and satisfied with each other when an attitude of gratitude was present.

It Takes Time but has Lasting Effects

Yes, a simple act of giving thanks can make a significant impact on our happiness, wellbeing, resilience, and relationships. What’s more, we can even make this change a lasting one! A repeated focus on gratitude can alter how we experience the world, therefore creating a shift towards a more positive trajectory. In other words, the more you activate your feelings of gratitude, the stronger your neural pathways become. Ultimately, you will become a more positive person with a strengthened overall mental wellbeing.

Fitness and physical activity requires time and persistence to create a physical change. Similarly, lasting changes to our brain requires the continual exercise of gratitude. For example, a 2016 study, participants wrote a thank you letter each week for three weeks. Following this, the results were not immediately apparent. However, over time participants started to report significantly better mental health. Moreover, according to their MRI scans, the feeling lasted for up to 3 months after their writing exercise ended. Scientists mention this find was significant because most other positive activities have not had such lasting effects on mental wellbeing.

Practicing gratitude can help train our brain to be more sensitive to the experience of gratitude and eventually improve our overall mental wellbeing over time.

Social Media has become an essential communication tool for us as a society. We spend more time than ever in our device-integrated virtual worlds. In other words, a significant amount of our shared life experiences have become more digital. Have you ever considered that it may be negatively influencing your mental well-being? If not, here is why you should consider a social media detox as a health measure.

4 Reasons to Try Social Media Detox

Better Sleep

Do you struggle to get resful sleep? If so, a social media detox may be essential to fixing your unhealthy sleep patters. Smartphones, computers, TVs, and most other digital devices screens emit a light called ‘blue light’. Furthermore, the sun emits the most blue light. This can be helpful during the daytime as it assists cognitive function, alertness, and adjustments to our sleep-wake cycles. However, continually exposing your eyes to blue light after dark is not recommended. For instance, it can cause symptoms of digital eye strains, mess with our sleeping cycles, and lead to a lack of sleep. Harvard researchers found that blue light suppresses melatonin (hormones that regulate sleep) twice as much as other lights do. Another study found decreased levels in melatonin, while wakefulness arose when people used their devices for just 30 minutes before bed.

Sleep and rest are essential for good health. Moreover, social media detox is essential for healthy sleep. A study from 2019 points out the positive potential of better mental health when shutting off devices and getting better sleep. As easy as it is to check social media in bed before falling asleep, it is best to keep devices away to induce deep sleep and better sleep cycles.

Less Stress and Better Mental Health

Smartphones keep us company everywhere, making it hard to detach from groups we are involved in. For example, there’s school, work, extracurricular activities, and other social obligations. When stressful environments leak into our private time, it makes feel like we need to tend to the needs of others around the clock. As a result, we may end up feeling stressful for much of the day. Therefore it is important to know how to turn away from nonessential needs that are irrelevant to the present moment. This can help decrease stress significantly.

Social Media Detox Experiments

In 2010, twelve universities world-wide participated in a universal experiment called Unplugged where they asked students to go unplugged for just 24 hours. Many turned unsuccessful with withdrawal-like symptoms when detaching from their phones. On the other hand, those who succeeded all reported the amazing benefits they experienced. For example, relaxation, peace of mind, and enhanced enjoyment from being present in the moment. Therefore, we can conclude that successful social media detox can have amazing mental benefits.

In 2015, another team of researchers in Denmark gathered more than 1000 participants to do a one week Facebook Experiment. In this study, the researchers looked at the impact of Facebook on our well-being. They found that quitting Facebook for just one week had significant positive effects. Overall, the participants’ life satisfaction increased, and emotions became more positive. A UK study in 2018 looked at over 10,000 teens and also found that longer use of social media correlated with body weight dissatisfaction, depressive symptoms, and low self-esteem. Therefore, even a short social media detox can create the mental breathing space that we deserve.

Quality Use of Time

A social media detox may be needed now more than ever. Our portable devices are so convenient and entertaining that it’s easy to get sucked into their luring appeal. With social media designed to be addictive, its ability to keep us engaged also keeps us from our will and possibilities to make better use of our time. More than half of the world population uses social media now, and some of us are so attached to the point that focusing on other activities becomes difficult. Furthermore, some may even go through withdrawal-like symptoms in extreme cases.

According to Global WebIndex’s 2020 research, “Social media users are now spending an average of 2 hours and 24 minutes per day multi networking across an average of 8 social networks and messaging apps”. Additionally, our time spent on social media keeps increasing every year. In effect, the WHO estimates that our total use in social media would sum up to 6 years 8 months within our global lifespan of 72 years. This is more than double compared to 1 hour and 2 minutes per day; the average time Americans spend eating and drinking in a day.

If you’re struggling to find the time to start a new habit, project, or commitment, you may want to look into where you’ve been investing your time. Above all, our attention time is a quality resource. So, limiting social media use and practicing the occational social media detox will open up more possibilities for activities that matter.

More Meaningful Interactions

A social media detox could also be beneficial for your personal relationships with others. Interactions we experience through social media has a different kind of nature from real-life in-person interactions. Social media can distort our sense of reality because many of us post highly curated and edited versions of our experiences. Meeting people in-person, spending time together, and understanding both the realistic highs and lows helps maintain a healthier perspective and relationship in general. Moreover, there are many socially nuanced cues we use in-person that never make it through social media. Psychologists mention this in their journal article too:

“Overreliance on technology has led to an impoverishment of social skills, leaving individuals unable to engage in meaningful conversations because such skills are being sacrificed for constant connection, resulting in short-term attention and a decreased ability to retain information. Individuals have come to be described as “alone together”: always connected via technology, but in fact isolated.”
– Daria J. Kuss & Mark D. Griffiths

The Unplugged experiment participants who attempted a social media detox for 24 hours also voiced that they experienced more meaningful social interactions. Harvard research suggests meaningful relationships correlate with longevity and better emotional, mental, and physical health. So, if you tend to reach out to people on social media, opt-in for a phone call or a face-to-face meet up to catch up next time.

How to Social Media Detox

Maybe you understand the benefits of a social media detox, but just don’t know where to start. Here are a few suggestions on how you can try:

1. Reduce Social Media Time with Apps

A social media detox could be a challenge, especially if it’s ingrained in your daily habit of checking things online. Fortunately, there are plenty of apps developed to help you through this process. For example, you could install an app controls the daily time you spend on social media sites. A social media detox doesn’t mean you have to go cold turkey. Just set a time limit to your usage to assure you aren’t spending excessive hours. An experimental study shows that just a 10-minute usage decrease per platform can be effective, so don’t be afraid to start small!

2. Try A Scheduled Fast

There are experiments that claim a social media detox of just 24 hours is effective. A one-week off Facebook experiment also showed significant results. Therefore, if you haven’t tried yet, going off social media for a set time period may lead to pleasantly surprising results. Give yourself a set duration to cut off from social media. A thoughtful reflection afterward can help you see how social media influences your day to day life.

If you are experienced in social media detox practices and want more of a challenge, I recommend a regularly scheduled fast. For example, setting just a day weekly as “Media-Free Day” or a monthly “No Social Media Week” can create healthy breaks from social media. Daily “Media-Free Hours” can also be just as helpful.

3. No Devices in the Bedroom

If your number one concern is quality sleep, prohibiting devices from your bedroom can be effective. It’s easy to get into the never-ending loop of browsing when we’re in bed, and the blue light emitting from your phone won’t help either. For instance, move your charging station to a location outside your bedroom and use an alarm clock to wake up. This will help you fall asleep better, and provide a more peaceful bed-time/morning hours. Therefore, if you’re struggling to get healthy sleep, a nighttime social media detox may be the place to start.

4. Try with a Buddy

Who says a social media detox can’t be a social activity? When trying something new, an accountability partner can make a huge difference. You’d be more motivated to keep up with goals while also having someone to discuss the challenges. Find someone who’s interested in trying with you. This shared experience can deepen your friendship while you’re at it.

While social media has brought our worlds closer than ever, the constant flow of information has diverted our quality of attention scattered. Moreover, as our digital capabilities grow exponentially towards efficiency, it becomes harder to keep up with the side effects it has on our day-to-day. For this reason, a social media detox may be the perfect way to get a much-needed break to find the peace and happiness we need.

Dancing Increases Serotonin Production

Everybody enjoys dancing. Whether it’s alone in your room or out with friends; rocking out to an upbeat tune, or rolling your hips to an R&B jam. Moving our bodies to the rhythm of music makes us feel energized, liberated, and can be great for stress relief. Moreover, many of us have heard of brain chemicals such as serotonin or dopamine, which are imperative to our happiness. However, did you know that dancing releases serotonin, dopamine, and other happiness hormones?

Not that you need any more of a reason to dance, but there is research to prove that dancing is good for the mind and body. Simply put, science says that dancing is good for you! A special combination of ‘happiness hormones’ react together to improve physical and emotional health.

Get Your DOSE of Happiness Hormones

Source: Unsplash.com

There have been many studies that show the positive effects of dancing on human health. In particular, there are unique benefits to dancing together with other people as we synchronize our bodies to the sound of music. UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) released a report that highlights the effects of four ‘happiness hormones’ in our brains – dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphin – that make up the shorthand ‘DOSE’. A special combination of these DOSE chemicals are released during dancing, each of which have a unique and positive impact on the health of both mind and body.

Source: Unsplash.com

Dopamine

Dopamine is released when we enjoy, remember, or anticipate pleasurable moments. It is a hormone that stimulates our motivation, and curiosity to explore. It’s also believed that routinely activating dopamine pathways through daily activities can help people to generally feel more joy and optimism in day-to-day life. In terms of dancing, the act of dancing releases dopamine when we listen to enjoyable, rhythmic music, which is imperative for a good dance party. This means that playing your favorite song and singing at the top of your lungs is scientifically proven to make you happier!

Source: Unsplash.com

Oxytocin

Oxytocin is released in the brain when we experience interpersonal connections with other people in close proximity. For example, friendly eye contact, amiable touch, or coordination of movement. Increased Oxytocin promotes feelings of trust and human connection, as well as diminish the impact of anxiety. Dancing together with friends in close proximity, mirroring each other’s motions and moving shoulder-to-shoulder, oxytocin is released, strengthening the interpersonal connection and amicable emotion between dance partners.

Serotonin

Serotonin is a chemical that promotes emotional contentment and ease of heart. A healthy and steady level of serotonin will act as a protector against depressive and anxious moods, as well as improve quality of sleep. It is sometimes known as the ‘happy chemical’, for its contributions to positive temperament and general wellbeing. But how exactly does dancing release serotonin? First, exercise stimulates the brain to increase serotonin production. Furthermore, the physically enduring act of dancing will increase the circulation of serotonin around your neural pathways.

Source: Unsplash.com

Endorphins

The endorphin system, similar to serotonin, is activated during exercise. Endorphins are the secret behind what is described as ‘runner’s high’; the euphoric and exhilirating feeling that washes over us when running long distance. In terms of effects, endorphins act similar to dopamine, in that they represent pleasure in the brain. Endorphins will inhibit any unpleasant feelings, allowing you to feel more positive and optimistic. On top of that, endorphins will limit feelings of fatigue and pain, creating a sense of lively energy. Dancing will release these endorphins, getting you in the zone of feeling tireless and energized!

Source: Unsplash.com

Dancing Increases Serotonin for Sustainable Happiness

Dancing releases dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. However, interestingly enough, none of the DOSE chemicals act individually. Instead, they combine and influence one another to create the cycle of happy hormones and positive emotions in the brain. Exercise is typically recommended for the maintenance of a healthy mind and body. The act of dancing in particular, however, releases a healthy combination of happiness hormones that benefit you emotionally, physically, and socially.

Dance Party for One

While the GGSC’s report recommends dancing in social situations as effectual for mental wellbeing, dancing on your own is just as beneficial. Dancing – regardless of whether it is in a social situation or in isolation – will release these ‘happiness’ chemicals, creating positive benefits inluding contributions to improved self-esteem and healthy coping strategies. Sometimes, the thought of exercise can be a drag – but now you know, all you need to do it just turn up your favorite song and jam out!
